Whats it cost to swap in a 6 speed?

I wasnt sure where to put this...12V drivetrain doesnt get a whole lot of traffic....

Alright fellas....FINALLY found the truck I want....98 Quad, 4X4, 12V, SB, New Tranny, 44 k MILES....only one problem its an auto....I dont really want the auto.

Any idea of the cost to do a 6 speed swap?? I want it to be able to handle 400-500 hp.

Or would I be better off going with a bombed auto??

Would appreciate any thoughts....

You got a tough one to decide on
First you need to know what your going to do with it.
If you are going to tow heavy alot of the time the 6 speed may be the way to go.
If you just like the gear shifting and want to play I say the 5 speed would be a better route (a little eazier to stuff)
But if killing rice light to light makes you then go BOMBed auto, you will be amazed at the difference
I think the costs would be comparable for the 3 by the time you factor in all the support items (clutches, trany coolers, etc)
Congrats on the find....was it local?

Ratsun,

Well, I'll have to say...I WOULD miss my exhaust brake. I dont really tow anything right now...use the truck mainly for commuting (this thing gets way better milage than my old Cherokee did). Ive got the 6 speed....I hated it when I first got it but dont mind it now...unless I get around the city and then grinding the gears get old really fast, especially in bumper to bumper traffic. Its been awhile since I drove a Cummins with an auto. But I definitely wouldnt mind blowing past a few ricers.

How does your tranny hold up to the twins?? Can i get away with just a converter and VB??
Im not keen on sinking $6 k into the tranny...

I have yet to look at the truck, and cant go until Wednesday (could be gone buy then)....its a few hours away. From the sounds of it...its a keeper. The guy wants top dollar (of course) $28k.....but I dont think thats really unreasonable - he has documented maintenance info and has always used good filters and Rotella as well.

Did I mention its a 12V 4X4 quad SB???

$4695.00, but you would want to upgrade the clutch most likely.

Yep, it will be inFamous. I will have to check out the pics. I have never ridden or driven a built auto but from what I have read they are great. I think that unless you find a wrecked donor truck for the NV5600 it will be real pricey to swap one in. Theres lots of guys here that have great luck and like their autos.

Hopefully they could be found at a boneyard for a reasonable price.

Dr.
If your hp stays closer to the 400 range than the 500 range you wont have any worries going with a good VB and TC. I havent had any problems yet but I havent been to the track yet either. From what I have heard if your not trying to boost launch in 4x4 you should be able to get away without billet shafts at that HP. The billet shafts add huge money to the bill.
Since you will already have a new (rebuilt ) tranny we can assume the rest of the parts and seals will not need replacing. If you want to come for a drive out west to warm up we have both Piers and DTT within 40 miles of each other so your drive home will be all
Dont snooze as you know gooduns sell FAST.

I think I will be able to get by with 450 hp..

I believe thats about all the HP the cooling system can reasonably handle anyway...
