Whats it cost to make an automatic bullet proof?

I'm in the market for a second gen truck. Due to my past experiences with the automatic transmission in these trucks I wanted to go with a manual this time... but as I'm beginning to find out they are quite rare.

If I end up buying another auto trans, what would be the cost of making it last a long time? Like aftermarket torque converters, etc... (Torque Converters always seem to be what goes out for me)

For a full built tranny, your looking around $4500. For just a torque converter and valve body, probably $1500-2000.

These prices depend on where you get them. G.B. has the best prices of the big guys = <3000 for a complete tranny and 1000-1500 for a valve body and torque converter. I suggest looking around here (try a search) then talking to them and going with your best choice. just my .002

And expect a terse response from Doug.

Then expect to wait ~2-3 months for your truck to be returned to you. It will be fixed and it will hold power, but there's better options for less time and money spent.

Call 'em. You may have better luck than I did.

My DTT (full rebuild on a non slipping Trans) )was a lot less than $4500. It has taken me from Stock to 460 HP with not so much as a hickup! 35,000 miles later, I am still very happy.

Depends what you are going to do with the truck and how much power you want. It costs alot more to hold 600hp vs 350-400hp. You can easily put $5000 in just parts if you plan on drag racing with high power levels and lots of boost off the line. Figure where you want to be power wise and do it once it is cheaper. Tim

I've seen it done with DTT parts and including R&R for under $3500. Included billet imput shaft, valve body, 91% converter, and various internal mods, but not billet output shaft. Add to that a billet output shaft, and trans becomes pretty much bullet proof at any power level.

Ask yourself if you really need both your kidneys. If you can get by with one, hit a pawn shop on the way to your choice of tranny builders.

You cannot beat the Goerend Brothers warranty. LIFETIME on the converter (yeah, if it slips he sends you a new one ) 100K on the entire tranny except damage to the case. This is all UNLIMITED horsepower, no matter what you're doing with it he'll fix it for ya. Talk to Cowhand and you'll expereience real first hand customer service. What's the price for such a wonderful thing? $2621.50 out the door. That's for a "standard" one, even though he has it in quite a few trucks running 600+ HP. You can add mods to your TC, like his cool new stator that only drops 50 RPMs when you lock it up He offers Billet shafts now, too. I'd definitely give him a call, go to www.gbtransmissions.com Dave is a first class guy who is dedicated to customer service.

And by the way, his tranny hasn't skipped a beat. I can get rubber into 3rd gear, that's how much power he puts down The stocker I got 1st, 2nd if I was really lucky

SMR Transmissions

Does anybody have experience with SMR transmissions, my dad got a TQ from them for his 92 CTD and he said it helped quite a bit. But I am looking for more feedback for their TQ, valve bodies and the works for the 2nd Gen. Trucks. Thanks.

Here you go, 1ST CUMNZ. I ordered a shift kit from them. McMopar installed one and really likes the kit.
