Waste Vegetable oil or Biodiesel?
 

I just got a '98.5 24 valve dodge cummins. I would like to run waste vegetable oil, but I've heard that isn't a good idea with this model because of the Bosch VP44 pump involved? Is this true? Does anyone have any experience with this model and WVO? What about Biodiesel? Anyone have any experience with this model and biodiesel? Any input appreciated, I'm new to diesels.

I have been looking into alternative fuel / energy for a long time , as for diesels , what I have found to work is bio diesel , but from system types vary , you need to adjust depending , the P-pump system are more able to run a wider variety of fuel , the VP needs more lube , so bio is a help , then the common rail system is the least able to run a variety of fuels .
The bottom line to me at this time is that , is that bio- diesel is the way to go , too many problems with the WVO , there are some running a lot of things , WVO , SVO , DSE ect. , I suggest only the bio , the main problem with all the fuel systems & engines , is the glycerin in the vegi oils not being removed & making it into bio diesel .
You can get a bad batch of any fuel including dyno diesel .
Its an odds game running the WVO .

I talked to a dodge master mechanic about running biodiesel in my truck, in my year the 02 it is fine even for straight B100 but for your model i would stick with B20 or less because the fuel systems are different on the two trucks sorry, i cant remember exactly what he said but it was that the older models can get some problems from running straight B100

I thought Bio diesel was vegi oil turned into Bio diesel. Somebody clarify the acronyms. What is what?

Waste veggie oil is just that, waste. Biodiesel is refined from waste veggie oil.

One requires refining, the other requires heat. The choice is yours, though added heat isn't a good thing for the VP.

Personally, I plan on running WVO.

if i have read right the problem with older trucks was rubber lines that the bio would eat up, if ur like me and changed to the fass and use all there lines from the tank to the vp you should be fine right? im looking at options on buying bulk or making my own fuel or a combination so im interested in this too

I've had good results with bio blends up to B20 in my VP truck.

I wouldn't consider WVO as the purity isn't high enough for my tastes.

I have been running a high ratio of Bio to regular diesel and have found my truck running quieter and with slightly better fuel economy. Up to 75% Bio and the Bio I get is virgin ( not made from waste veggie oil ).

You would be hard pressed to find any commercial processors out there using WVO=waste vegi oil .
There is not enough for the 100++ processors around the country .
By the way a commercial processor told us yesterday that 90% of bio diesel made here is being shipped over seas .
Also many have quit processing because of the costs of vegi oil , menthanol .
What they are using is SVO=straight vegi oil or VVO=virgin vegi oil .
The WVO is what many of the home / garage , do your selfers are using , not the commercial plants .
Most auto manufactures went away from rubber in around 94 .
