Tuner/Chip question

Ok i might sound stupid when i ask this but i have always heard that you couldnt run a tuner until 98.5. Is this tru or do they make a tuner for trucks older than that?

98.5 is when the injection system changed to the VP44 pump. It is electronically controlled so you can use a chip or tuner to change the way it fuels. The 94-1998 trucks ran the mechanical P7100 injection pump. It is a mechanical pump with no electronic controls to manipulate. We can change it by going into the pump with a fuel control plate, and a governor spring kit to get basically the same thing out of them power wise as a chip.

The plate is going to be determined by what you do with the truck and what you are looking for out of it. The most common plate for your truck if it is an auto would be the #10 plate. it is going to give you another 40hp and about 100ftlbs of torque. If you have a manual tranny then you can go with the #11 for 60hp and 150ftlbs of torque. For the Governor springs go with the 3000rpm kit. It will extend the rpm where you engine is going to make useable power.

What do you mean by extend the rpm. I have a 97' 5 spd with 4:10 rear. So the #11 plate is good for me?
