tug of war bumper pull, 4 Hi or 4 Lo
so a guy i work with drives a 04 dirtymax. its lifted pretty high and has 34" mud tires... im running 265 70 R 17 all terrains! he said that he would run in 2wd and i would run in 4wd!
i know my chances are slim but still thinking about going for it! just wondering if i should run in 4hi or 4 lo... and if you guys have any other suggestions! |
Lower the tire psi to about 40 as long as you can refill. I'd go in 4low and you shouldn't have a problem winning as long as he's in 2wd. Throw about 1k lbs in your bed and you'll forsure take him.

never thought about my tires psi! cant do anything about the weight in the bed, but im thinkin about giving it a shot!

he is not going to get traction at all. like high big said, put weight in the bed and 4low dirtymax boy aint gotta chance |
On dirt or pavement? With him in 2WD, cover the back of your truck with a tarp or something to protect your paint...
There are plenty of videos on youtube about tug-o-wars. Watch them- you can pick up some good examples of what to do, and what not to do. Slow and steady wins the day. |
I'm a 1st gen guy, but this came up under latest posts. I own a Dmax, and have gone through a few. They do not excel at bumper-to-bumper pulls as their powerband is much more similar to a big block gasser motor. It needs to be wound out to make a lot of power.
The one thing that can help a Dmax in a pull, though, is the fact that the IFS gets a LOT of traction. Problem is, as well as the IFS hooks, it is EXCEEDINGLY weak. The tie rods can bend/snap during a boosted 4HI launch on a stock truck, now multiply that problem by 10,000 because you're hooked to ANOTHER truck going the other way and breakage is nearly inevitable. If he doesn't have tie rod sleeves, the Dmax will go home on a tow truck. |

i really want to, but kinda scared as well! this truck is my baby and my only set of wheels. im 23 and not to strapped for cash but cant readily throw it away either...
but i think im going to go for it! were have a squadron picnic today and i think thats where he wants to have it so it should be on pavement! would you guys do a boosted launch or not? |

I would say no on the boosted launch. Tight 20k lb chain and then slowly lay into the throttle up to about 2k rpms (if you can). I'd seriously go get some weight for the bed!!!! AND YES VIDEO IS MANDATORY at least for insurance and bragging rights.

set up your camera first, then when you guys hook up, let him pull first, just hold your brakes until his tires break loose, then slowly go forward in 4lo.

Tie a sheet or something around the chain will save your buttocks if the chain does break

well he chickened out and didnt bring a tow strap... im not the one who is initiating this, so if he ever brings in a tow strap ill do it. my shop wants us to do it as well! so ill keep you guys posted!

Make sure his hitch is not higher than yours. If he is pulling up, it unloads your rear tires and you might as well be pulling in 2WD.
If you have to, get a big drop hitch and flip it over. |

Lower center of gravity...if his (Dmax) tow hitch is higher than cowboykilla then once loaded the center of gravity takes over giving cowboy even more traction. I dont think the force pullng up by the dmax will even come close to lifting the rear end of a truck. please correct me if i am wrong, there is no shame in being wrong its always a learning oppertunity.
