transmission advice needed

I tow approx. 25000#'s about 200 miles per month. I am experiencing weak starts when loaded and feel some trans slippage during acceleration. I believe its time to upgrade although the truck has only 41,000 miles.

My questions are:

1. SHould I go with a triple lock or single TQ?

2. How long should I expect one of these upgrades last?

3. IS there a spin on external filter that anyone has installed to facilitate simple filter and complete fluid changes?

A good torque converter should last a long time. The waight that you pull is a lot, but if you take off easy (not racing every time) it should not matter. Their is a lot of choices on a tc. Their is a member her who sells a good tripple disk that he makes himself (look in the classifieds??). You could also do a search on georand, he is good and has some awesome warrenties. When I talked to him it sounded like they tested some of their trucks by hooking to farm equipment, that should be a good example of pulling heavy.

good luck just my .002

You don't mention if your JUST looking at TC's or thinking about a full upgrade?

I would not recommend doing only a TC. There are reasons why DTT and some others will not sell you a TC only. I would call and talk to some experts.

How long will they last? Don't want to start a tranny war...but IMO, DTT full rebuild is the best tranny for heavy towing out there. I don't tow near as heavy as you, but just had mine gone through at 60,000 miles. Based on what little wear & tear was found I'm confortable predicting at least 200,000 trouble free miles with reasonable TLC.

Gounded..........Your question has an easy answer. You're in 'Fla, so mosey over to Fort Walton and install a Sun Coast. How long will it last. As long as you use it. We've been drag racing a triple disc 3 years now. Joe ain't cheap and his bed side manner is a little rusty, but the product is flawless.

I suggest that you call the 'big 4' tranny shops and ask questions. The 'big 4' are DTT, Goerend Bro's., ATS, and Suncoast. Discuss your plans with them and see what they recommend.

Yeah, but he's at home with SunCoast. Not a shipment across America.

You tow 25K# with a TST box and a stock automatic? I hope this trans slippage is not a surprise to you, because it isn't a surprise to me!

I'd go with a Full DTT tranny-- with that much weight you need all the help available to an auto trans.

With proper setup, a single disc converter will hold just fine.

As much as I like the DTT stuff-- I'd also put in a strong recommendation for Suncoast! They've proven themselves to me in some of the fastest 1/4mi trucks around (as has DTT, I may add).

I agree with this statement....but does fastest equate to strongest and longest lasting? That's not a dig....I really don't know!

That is some serious weight, don't be fooled, upgrades internally are necessary to make it survive and last. The TC is one mere component, the internals will need alot of help, too.

DTT has proven their design for heavy towing apps, but call and ask these same questions to all vendors mentioned.

All the big 4 tranny companies(and even some smaller ones) are pretty good. I would go with a triple disc goerend if i were you. Goerend has a lifetime warranty on his triple disc, and has as good a price as anyone. Check him out at www.gbtransmissions.com, and give him a call.

Preston beat me to it.
My feeling is the installer is more important than the brand.
Since you are so close to Suncoast it makes the decision easy.
