Towing with a Smarty??

If you've seen my other thread, I'm thinking about getting a Smarty to replace my dead EZ. How does the Smarty work when towing (~10,000 lbs)? What are the dos and don'ts?

I would imagine just stick with one of the lower SW#'s for towing, but I would like to hear some real world experiences.

Thanks.

It would be nice to have one that was adjustable on the fly without having to pull over, shut down, reflash, then get going again. Juice with Attitude works well for towing.

Towed about 9k 2,500 miles from San Francisco to Southern Mississippi in 72 hours. Took 5 South from CA and hit Interstate 10 all the way to MS. Played around with the smarty between level 4 to level 7. I got the best power/mpg on level 7 with a light foot averaging about 68mph. Held speed fine climbing the long grades.

I think the smarty is great....but i'm not sure it's worth the $700-800 price.

Planning on stacking it with an edge comp when i get back from Iraq.

Smarty shines when towing, thats what it does best. I tow 18k & I run Smarty sw3 timing 4 & I absolutely love the way my truck drives. Ever since the Revo was released, I've been a happy man.

I tow 10K on a regular basis with Smarty on level 3 and it works just fine. I have the Revo software, just never got around to installing it but I'm sure it will be just as great.

On the fly adjust-ability would be nice but you can't have everything.

What about EGT's??
You guys have mentioned good power and Mileage, but what about temps?

Also, in the Smarty book it says directly, Do not tow with.
I mean, It says do not stack either, but DD around town empty is alot easier to turn a stacked chip down compared to pullin over on the highway with a load behind ya for the Smarty.

Ive been curious too cause I currently tow with my Juice on 3 and thats all. Does GREAT but ill be upgrading to Mach 4's soon and was wonderin how Smarty timing would do for EGT's cause I think the Juice with 150's will be much too hot.

SMARTY says not to tow on the mileage setting i believe. it just adds too much timing for towing. i think you'll be fine anywhere from 3 - 7 . . .

Mine is set on Level 3 no matter what I'm doing, towing or daily driving. When you tow, most people tend to drive by the pyro anyways so it is not an issue, just watch your temps.

I've towed on higher settings and it's the same thing but Level 3 works the best for me as an all around setting.

Just drive by your gages and enjoy the extra power.

I love my Smarty.....I have it stacked with the EZ, Level 8 CatCHer with no timing. The past three days since the install along with the Raptor-150 have been great. EGTs and Boost are up slightly but boy can she BELCH coal now....not that I do it alot, only when parked at work to show off ;-)

Thats kinda what I figured. Most testing is done by watching gauges anyway it seems haha.

So second thought, I always heard that advanced timing drops EGT's. So I would think that if you ran just the odd SW's, saaaay with some 100-150 hp sticks, then EGT's should be lower then if Smarty was ran on even SW's.

Any of you guys tested this sinerio and found it true?
When I tried I didnt notice a dif, BUT, I didnt try while towing and only have RV 275's.
(juice was off while testing dif timing settings)

When I tow heavy, I always run sw3 with Adrenaline on PL03-06. About 525hp or more at those settings.

That would seem to be the case with my truck. Ever since my EZ died and I unplugged it, my truck has been running significantly higher EGT's without the added timing of the EZ. I have a trip coming up where I'll be towing my trailer and I'm a bit worried about the EGT's.... so I've been frantically searching around for a used Smarty before I leave for my trip. If I can't find one in time, I may have to bite the bullet and buy one new.

I have an EZ in my garage that I replaced with my current Smarty/FMS combo. I keep it just in case I want to go back, or for the day I sell my truck. If you want to borrow it or buy it, shoot me a message. Cover the shipping back to me and it's all good.
