Timing worth the Money ?

Hi, I have a 12 Valve with a few small mods and was wondering if changing the timing is worth the money ? I was thinking about 15.5 - 16 but thats a guess. Thanks for any help or input, Ed

Yeah i think you would benifit from it with milage gains and possible power bump, lower temps.

Most shops around here have quoted me $200-$220... I think the trick is how they locate TDC, from what I have been told is doing the drop valve method is the most acuarate but time consuming. Bumping the timing is deffinately worth it, my stock timing had slipped down to 8* so when I bumped to 18.5* it made it feel like going from a Ford Bronco II to a Corvette!

What should it be at? I have a stock 97 CA emmissions truck and aside from maybe grinding my own plate it will probably stay stock for a while. What effect would timing have on fuel economy with my stock rig?

I'd do 16.5* for economy and safety.

I emailed a reputable shop by my house to get a price on having them do the timing on my 12v and this is the response I got:

"Injection pump is pin time to motor which was pin timed during injection pump installation. We do everything here except tires & alignments. We work on all diesels. If you have any questions please dont hesitate to call."

I am confused a little because their response leads me to believe that they won't do the timing? ***?? Did I ask the wrong question?

Well if they did't understand what you meant by getting your p pump timed they probably arn't experienced with bumping timing, just R&R pumps to factory specs.

I'm like dzlfarmboy - if they can't just say "yes we can change your timing to XX* and we do this measuring the plunger lift", then move onto to another shop. It is definitely worth going to 16.5* for fuel economy lower temps and smoother running. I'm working on going from 23 to 25 so it can be taken further but for much different reasons and with alot of other mods. .
