Super B Turbo Review

We installed this turbo on my roommates truck (dodgediesel4x4) last night. The install was a lot harder than we thought. First we couldn't get the down pipe off. We beat on it, cut it, pulled, tugged, even hooked a tow strap and a hi lift jack to try and pull it out and we ended up breaking the strap. We finally found a buddy with a sawzall and got that off. Then we go to install the new down pipe and my roommate breaks the bolt on the v-band clamp. So after rigging another one up we got the new down pipe on only to find out that it's about an inch to short and it sits about an inch to the right of the rest of the exhaust. So he's running straight down pipe for the time being. Attaching the discharge tube to the turbo was also not a fun task. The oil drain had to be "fanagled" into place. But after all that we got it installed.

Now the fun part. This turbo is noticeably slower spooling than the stock one. It doesn't come alive till about 15-20psi of boost and then it instantly rockets to 41. The EGT's peak at about 1350* and stay there and they take a long time to get there. We didn't see 1350* until about the top end of 5th gear. We're hooking the little 2000lb work trailer up to his truck today so I'll get back to yall on towing capabilities. We're also gonna test the EGT difference between the stock air box, scotty without the hole, and scotty with the hole just to see the difference.

For those of you who don't know his mods, they are Edge Comp (wire tapped) set on kill, Mach 1.5's, Scotty 2 with hole, 4" turbo back Warpspeed Exhaust, Con OFE, and now the Super B Turbo.

Well those temps were with the scotty 2 and the hole. I talked to him today and pulling that little trailer he can see 1200* accelerating a little faster than normal through the gears. This thing is really a top end turbo. He didn't mention if there was any surging or not.

Sorry, you guys are having trouble... What was different about the oil drain??? I could tell he was a little worried after someone else was selling because they thought it was slow spooling.. from what I heard it wasn't slower than the other turbos they had tried.. He just needs more fuel.. I'll drop him a line tonight.. after a day with the little trailer....

Sounds like the truck is back to its smokey self...

Wow, slow spooling? I have one on my 12V, it was a simple, easy install and had only slightly more lag than stock! Sounds like he needs to adjust the low boost fueling?

This super-B is the smaller Airwerks turbo, is it not? Roughly similar to the Airwerks Super that Rip Rook sells?

Spoolup is very subjective, so I won't comment on that.

I'd hope that an upgraded turbo would be able to do a better job of cooling a smaller injector like 1.5.

What am I to do when a wire-tap box is added to my M4s? I guess this turbo is not an option for me-- too small. I'd rather have something a little laggy (thanks to the NV5600) than something that gave plasma-torch EGTs.

Funny that Industrial Injection's turbos are getting so much attention. When I spoke with Mark Chapple (of TST) last week, he said they are the best turbos he's tested to date.

That, and the I.I. price is reasonable, so they're at the top of my list at the moment.

i have been considering this turbo as my next step after the clutch. but i know i am def gonna need a comp with my DD3's to spool it. Also is this a wastegated version?

I am gonna need something big but have it wastegated to keep it under 45psi due to my lack of replacement head studs. this sounds like it could be a good turbo once its installed. keep us posted on how it works!

Ok. Here's another update. The above towing EGT numbers were with the comp on 5x5. Go figure. With the comp on 2x5 he can only hit 1200*. Maybe 1300* if he stays on it long enough. Even with the comp on 5x5 is doesn't really hit until about 20 psi and then it rockets to 41 and stays there. 20 psi happens about 2000-2200 rpm I think. He does have the 6 spd in his.

JDGnut, there wasn't anything different with the oil drain line it was just the way the waste gate was positioned that made it very difficult to hook up. It also made it very difficult to get the nut on the back left manifold stud. Yeah. It smokes. A lot. Fortunately he went and had the exhaust fixed yesterday so it's back out the tail pipe instead of under the cab. Talk about noisy.

getblown5.9, yes, this is the wastegated version and we are using the edge comp boost elbow in it.

I once had to drive my truck home from Kaufman, Tx (95 miles) with just the downpipe on it...after installing my B-1 and finding the same mismatch to the exhaust. Fixed it with 16" of SS Flexpipe...but....could not believe how loud a CTD is with just a downpipe!

You actually did some heavy throttle testing with it that way??

For comparison info...can you report on
-EGT's while holding 30 psi boost?...probably can't hold it for long.
-Boost levels at sustained 60 & 70 mph..level, any comp setting (should not matter), empty & 5th gear?

I'll ask him to check on that. Empty running 70mph in 6th gear he sees 5-8 psi. With a trailer he sees 10psi. Yeah. WOT in a down pipe only cummins is VERY loud.
