Staged Supercharger/Turbocharger Combo
Staged Supercharger/Turbocharger Combo
I know this has been done before on production heavy duty diesels but I would like to know if anyone has tinkerd around with it on our 5.9's. With Procharger making superchargers that flow 4300cfm at 32psi wouldn't this be a great substitute as a primary in a twin setup... How would you like taking off from 10psi at idle... talk about better throtle response and an entirely new driving experience. Everyone knows the pulleys rob some hp but with our hevily torqued diesels this should be even less than a problem than in gassers. Turbo lag would be all but gone since the fuel being dumped in at lower rpm's would already be burning with the supercharger supplied bost. Also the turbo shouldn't outrun the supercharger if the supercharger can move over 4300cfm. I got questions anyone got answers?
Re:Staged Supercharger/Turbocharger Combo
I've heard of one guy doing it on our trucks. He used a supercharger and a H2E. It sounds like a good idea if you can afford the supercharger. They seem to be quite expensive.
Re:Staged Supercharger/Turbocharger Combo
but that would clear up the smoke... :'(

Yeah, Nathen is right, but the guy never gave any pics, I take that thread to the top about once every 3 months just to try to find him. ???

Something cool for sure.

Re:Staged Supercharger/Turbocharger Combo
With the right pulley setup our lower RPM's should not be a hindering factor, and with a supercharger puting out 4300cfm the turbo will never overtake it. It should make lots of quick boost with a lot less backpressure. The only downside again is the powerloss of the pully's which I would argue is not as much as in a gasser. I remember a post about how much power our huge fan cost us. Wasn't it about 5hp from a 600hp truck? Imagine the bottom end with this setup

Battering Ram that FC3R or FC4R procharger is rated at close to 60,000 RPM's, they don't make a pulley small enough as most of those guys run 8500-9000 RPM, plus the cost is like $7000 retail if I remember corrrectly......your bored dude

Volvo Penta KAD 44P EDC marine engine(diesel) has a supercharger and a turbo, the s/c has an electric clutch, at low rpm's the s/c makes boost and when boost rises to a cetain level the
electric clutch turns off and it runs on turbo only. It is very responsive little engine, revs very quick like a hot rod gasser.
It is an inline 6, 3.6L,24 valve, 260 crank horsepower, maximum rpm is 3900 . Pretty impressive for around 216 cubic inches.
Re:Staged Supercharger/Turbocharger Combo
Jim, I planned on using a wagon wheel for the pulley on the crank and a tire off an old hotwheels car for the pulley on the supercharger...

Your killing me ;D

Seriously, there new chain drive blowers are awesome, yep chain drive from the crank....uses a SFI prostock motorcycle chain instead of a belt....two years in the making!

Jim

Don't know about the hood as I believe they have a really good cover but they have been broken at real high RPM, there no fool proof but better than belts.

Jim
Re:Staged Supercharger/Turbocharger Combo
With the availability of sprokets... surely they could find a match to spin the D-3R close to its max 38,000 rpm at 3500 engine rpm for us 24valvers.... they put the smaller superchargers that max at 60,000rpm on production trucks and cars that turn less than 6,000 engine rpm.
