Re:To split or not to split...

For a 2x4 I'd change the rear gear. Much cheaper than a GV. IF 4x4 it's prolly getting close.

With 3.54's and 235/85/16 I run 2k @ 69 mph

Re:To split or not to split...

With my Auto in 4th OD I run about 1900 RPM at 70MPH with my 3.55s and 245 on.

Bigger tires would be the way to go for you!

Re:To split or not to split...

Thank for all the input everyone. After a lot of consideration I decided to swap gears instead of splitting them. With 3.55s and a bigger tire it will put me where I want to be in terms of rpms. Along with the swap I want to get an ARB air locker also.

It is my understanding that a 17x10 wheel will work. Any particular brand more popular? I want to put BFG rubbers on it.

Thanks again.

Peter

Re:To split or not to split...

Ok, someone explain the rear end ratios to me, Cause im getting confused. The way i thought it workked was likek take the 4.10 The drive shaft turned 4 times for every 1 time that the axle(tires) turned Which makes sense, But if you take the comparable 3.55 or anything like that then the drive shaft would turn 3 times for every 5 turns of the axle( tires ) which doesnt make sense. Or am i right with this?

Re:To split or not to split...

Actualy it is driveshft 4.1 turns to 1 or in the other case 3.55 turns to one. AS you can see with 3.55s the truck will be going faster at the same rms. Hope it helps.

Re:To split or not to split...

You always compare the whole numebr to 1 whether it's 4.10 to 1, 3.55 to 1, or 10.56 to 1 that I have seen in some off road trucks. My old 89 was 3.08 to 1 and my old Fury was 2.72 to 1 for highway cruising. The first number is how many times the drive shaft or pinion turns compared to how many times the ring gear (or tires) turn.
Hope this helps.

gears AND tires can produce a drastic change. Do the math before you write the check.

Re:To split or not to split...

My uncle once purchased an old four cylinder Jeep that had 4.27 to 1 gears and he wanted something lower. He swapped a fellow the 4.27's for a set of 5.86 to 1 axles. I helped him put all new seals and stuff in the traded axles and install them in the Jeep. The thing would only run about 42 mph wide open but would climb up the side of the barn if it could get traction.

Re:To split or not to split...

I've got the 4:10's in my truck and with the 33" tall BFG's it's works out perfect for me. Granted it's no speed queen but 96 mph is plenty fast enough for me, plus it's great not down shifting all the time with 30K behind me. 8)

I drove a 3.55 geared 2000 the other day and hated it, dang thing was a slug off the line, but once it hit about 50 mph you better look out. The speedo reads 120 and I'd say it will bury it in a hurry. :

Yep, he wanted something that would climb over downed trees and up the sides of spoil piles and stuff. That little thing was awsome for sure. I've seen him do stuff with a Jeep I never thought they would do but he's been driving them since he could walk almost. He took my son out ground hog hunting one day and Joshua said "dad, you should have seen where we went in that Jeep".
