SouthBend Clutch-shifting problems UPDATE

Just put in a new MU1947-Con-O clutch kit and changed the trans. lube from
85-90 Synthetic to the proper 5-30 Amsoil "synchromesh".
Its a REAL b-tch ti get in any gear now and the pedal is on the floor for full disengagement. Shifts much harder and down shifting is very difficult.:o
I assume the clutch will wear in some, but I`m dissapointed in the fluid results. The truck only has 60,000miles and everything looked like new inside,no debri or ground-up brass in the botom.
What gives? Why did it work better with the "wrong" lube?[redface]

You probably got air in the clutch hydraulics system....try taking the slave out of the bellhousing & pump it in/out until you feel restriction. The air will work its way out.

denny G 04-29-2007 10:02 AM

Ok,I`ll try that. But how did I get air in it if I never took it apart? Does the air
get in from it laying around extended beyond its normal range of motion?[redface]

blackdiesel 04-29-2007 11:36 AM

Cant help you with your problem, but im sure you didnt get air into your line. That is if you didnt take it apart, which there is no need too ;)

Big Smoky 04-29-2007 01:26 PM

Nope, I'm positive you didn't get air in the line. It's a totally sealed system. As for the fluid, is it GL4? If not you will trash your syncro's and no telling what else. You put 5w-35 in it???????? It's supposed to be Castrol Syntoruqe or Mopar 75w-85 GL4 I think.

Box5 04-29-2007 02:00 PM

5w 30?? danger, lol. like he said ^, it should be 75w85 GL4, basically special oil for the nv4500 syncro's.

blackdiesel 04-29-2007 02:42 PM

box, he has the 5600...

denny, i put pennzoil syncormesh in my trans last time i replaced it. i got it at O'Reillys...

Box5 04-29-2007 03:12 PM

good call ^, i was gonna say...cus 5w30 in a nv4500 is dangerous, lol.

denny G 04-29-2007 03:13 PM

It says right on the bottle nv350/nv1500/nv3500/NV5600-etc........
Spec.Chrysler MS-9224/MS-9417.
Others on here have used this Amsoil with success.:(

P.O.R. 04-29-2007 04:13 PM

i think your hydraulic system is weak not pushing far enough to disengage completely.

TheBigNasty 04-29-2007 08:29 PM

I don't know about the 5600 but on the 4500 you can put the lever in the wrong way, if you follow SB's instructions it says the proper way to have the lever. If it is backwards it will have similar results.

UPDATE/Mods

Changed the pedal ratio by 3/8`` of an inch. Works GREAT! Goes into low gears just like stock. A 1/4`` would have been better,it bottoms out the master cyl.just before it touches the floor[guitar] .
Now if the clutch wears in a litlle, kinda grabby now I will be happy with my truck again,,,,,,,,,,,,[coffee]

getblown5.9 04-30-2007 07:50 PM

you talking about the adjustment rod where it hooks to the pedal? how hard was it to adjust?

denny G 04-30-2007 09:08 PM

No, I cut the pedal and welded it. I moved the pin that the rod goes over 3/8ths. farther away from the pivot for the pedal. It was`nt hard to do. Took about 1/2 an hour.[coffee]

blackdiesel 04-30-2007 09:09 PM

GB, its real easy. just screw it out.
