Question Single Straight Pipe Exhaust that exits Before the Rear Wheel.... ??

How does running straight pipe single exhaust change the tone/sound quality -Vs- running out over the axle ??

The shorter the exhaust the louder it will be.

See my gallery.

You really have to have smokey injectors to blacken the side of the truck with a side pipe. It will dirty the chrome wheel , but it washes off easily.

I went from the muffler outlet to the side outlet with a piece of flex pipe. At one time I had it wrapped in insulating cloth to protect it from the elements. It made it a bit quieter.

The side pipe is just a touch louder than the rear exhaust was. Not as much as you'd think. You won't want to run with the rear passenger window open on a CC though. It isn't really loud like that, but you can hear it.

My side pipe is a 4".

I did the side exit because I played around with an air suspension system I built I've since pulled it off, but I'll revisit it in the future. The stock exhaust system crowded things too much.

I wouldn't want stacks because I think they would be noisy and because they would take up box room and because I pull a 5er and I need all the turn clearance between the cab and the 5er I can get when turning sharp.

Excuse my English. It is late and I'm tired and I've been posting way too much lately.

i'VE GOT A CHEESEY SIDE PIPE SETUP THAT EXITS IN FRONT OF THE REAR TIRE. I BUILT IN IN AN AFTERNOON OUT OF SCRAP EXHAUST PARTS I GOT FROM WORK FROM THE MACKS. IT IS DEFINITLY LOUDER THAN WHEN IT RAN OVER THE AXLE AND OUT THE BACK. TRUCK TENNDS TO REV A LITTLE QUICKER AS WELL. I LIKE THE SOUND OF IT, ONLY WISH IT LOOKED BETTER. dOES SOUND MEAN GOING UNDER THE TWO CEMENT SURROUNDED BRIDGES HERE IN TOWN

That may be the case with Fords.
My buddy has an 05 superduty running a pipe before the rear while and he barely smokes at all. I know that my truck prior to any mods other than my comp and a straight pipe smoked like a frieght train and still does. Theres no way I could run an exhuast like that without having to wash my truck once a day

Question

Yea! This is what I'm after below....

Would 5" or 6" straight pipe be TOO obnoxious and Loud ??

If so, what type size muffler or resonator would quiet it done a TAD ??

I'd put a turn back on that. At least the exhaust/sound would be going back instead of out the side.

Are you running a muffler with that ?

Has anyone with a 600 motor went from a straight pipe behind the wheel exit to straight pipe shorty? If so please coment. I am realy considering this set up (4" pipe with 5 or 6" tip) but I am conserned about the volume increase in the cab, and I do not want a muffler. I mainly just like the way it looks. My truck is by no means to loud in the cab right now but with the afe and straight pipe it wouldnt take much more and a conversation could get difficult

mtl, so do you have any sort of muffler or cat? From your sig it looks like you got a bullhauler stack and necked it to 4" and put it under your truck intead of in the bead. Could you tell me where you got the 6" bullhauler from? I am only 22 so I am still into loud, you know what they say "if its too loud your too old". How did you neck down 6 to 4? Also if you could get some pics lookin down the truck or striaght from the side side that would be great. I couldnt tell much form the pics in you gallery. I am sure I have more questions for you but I cant remember them right now.

Min enever blackens the truck...th ehweel yes. BUT as mentioned above it washes over very easily (even easier than brake dust.)

I had an MBRP system on my previous truck (same motor) with the full exit out the rear. Sounded nice.

With the shorty setup (same MBRP muffler)...I think it's even better sounding and it is quite a bit louder. Not sure I have the cahones to run without a muffler though.
Want to post images but imageshack seems to be down right now.
