Retreads/ Recaps for 22.5s

Looking into 22.5s for my truck and wanted to get some opinions on retreads. Found some good deals on them, just not sure if I will regret it later.

I have done a good bit of reading here...

Personally, I'd rather have a new tire on my dually. They're lighter and less likely to have a problem.

i worked on semis for 2 years and my personal opinion is that retreads are great in the winter time but in the summer they get hot and the tread just peels off all at once "Gators" on the road.. but if the price was right i would get them and i guess it really depends on how long you drive for at a time and how much you haul

I found some retreads with a good tread design for $150 each. The heaviest thing I tow is my trooper, maybe 6K lbs with the trailer.

thats not a bad price you just have to be careful with good hot days running them for hours... rember you have to buy brand new steer tires

Yeah can't cap steers, drives would be fine on a dually. Not like your gonna blow one and the truck will drop to the ground. This is one of those topics where ppl will advise against em, and others will be all for em.

But from personal experience of 3 years workin on big trucks, goin out on the road doing tires, recaps blow out just as much as virgin tires. If ya take a look at a gator, most of the times, there will be steel in it, meaning the cap didnt come off the casing, the casing gave out, usually from a bad casing, or under/over inflation. Especially if you goto a good capper, they will inspect the casing for defects, and "RAR" the tire, meaning it cannot be capped, junk casing. The safest way to go would be to get a "spec" recap, meaning brand name casing no older than 5 years, no more than 2 repairs, and no more than 1 cap.

We run an open shouldered 11r24.5, 4310 style recap on our 20 ton wrecker, never have had any problems with em.

Couldn't have said it better myself. There is NOTHING wrong with caps. The whole fear that they fly apart is misplaced. We have 6 trucks somewhere like 12 trailers, most are spread axles (harder on tires when turning), frequently around or over 100k lbs they run year round and we have 0 cap issues. We even have some with wide base super singles with caps and again have 0 issues. Most tire failures are the casing not the cap caused by under inflation. Also he's asking about using a semi tire on a pickup, weight is not going to be an issue. One tire is almost rated for more than the whole truck weighs.
