Question Pushlock Question

I went to Grainger for the pushlock fittings for hooking up a fuel pressure gauge and they only had the 1/8 NPT (M) to 1/4 id. pushlock. I got that there, but am still searching for the 1/8 NPT (F) to 1/4 id for hooking up to the gauge.
I put the pushlock intot the hose I got at Napa (1/4" Fuel Line, but marked "Not for Fuel Injection Systems- SAE 30R7 Gates"). When the yellow plastic cup is flush with the end of the hose, it fits loosely over it. In other words, I can spin the plastic cup around. Is this normal? Or do I need a little bigger OD hose? I can't measure the OD, as my calipers are at work.

Thanks,
~Rob

As long as it doesn't leak, it's fine. Hook it up to compressed air at 20psi and check it out.

Thanks HOHN,
That is what I was going to do (pressurize it to 20 psi) as soon as I can cap off one end of the assembly. Figured the "no leak" thing was the most important thing, not if the cup spins around or not.

Rob,
I got the female 1/8" NPT to 1/4" ID push-lock for the gauge at NAPA. Just check their bins. Maybe try a hydraulics supplier type shop if you can't find any at NAPA.
Five of the seven yellow cups on push-loks on my truck can spin....no leaks. I think they're designed as more of a hose stopper so you don't push the hose past a certain point. I don't see how they could possibly seal anything....what if the hose was not cut perfectly?...no way it would seal then

Thanks Moose.

2 other questions:

1) I couldn't find a female pushlock, so I bought another male one and a F-F coupler. I also bought a F-F 90* elbow to use if anyone thinks the following is better: I was wondering if it would be easier to dress the fuel line at the gauge by putting the F-F elbow on it and then hooking up the fuel line (with the male pushlock).

2) Someone told me not to use regular pipe tape, that there is one for diesel use. Where can I get that? I tried Napa and they had never heard of it. Will the liquid stuff work too?

Thanks,
~Rob

as far as fuel pressure gauges go, i have read to use the liquid because the tape could enter in the injection pump, and that is what i did. so, the liquid should be used in your application.

OK,

Doesnt matter if the yellow cups spin....I use pushlok hose at work all the time and it still seals fine.

If you can find the female connector, just get a 1/8" pipe coupling (150 pound)....should be female ON both ends. As for the thread tape....you are correct, do not use regular teflon....You must get the stuff that is petroleum rated....there IS a defference. Alternatively, you can get liquid teflon made by loctite PST 567:

http://www.loctite.com/int_henkel/lo...d=130&layout=1

Youll have to search under thread sealing to see it.

Wow,
That Loc-tite PST 567 is expensive. $17 for 50 milli-liters at Grainger. Probably going to get it though. Want this done right.

I picked up the "yellow" thread tape (rated for petroleum) at Home Depot -- I don't remember the exact price but it was less than a couple bucks. The application as indicated on the roll states it can be used for propane, gasoline, and kerosene, so it will work for diesel too. It's a little thicker than the teflon, but just as easy to use.

Permatex #2 works excellent for a fraction of the price, at any auto parts.

Even though it will hold up the big problem with any thread tape is if you ever have take things apart the debris the tape leaves is almost impossible to totally clean up. I can only imagine what a piece of tape could do to an injection pump or injector.

That's the reason I want to stay away from tape. The thought of a piece of tape going downstream is what scares me. I will use the liquid type, be it Permatex #2 or the Loc-tite.
Even if I pay $17 now, that is a lot cheaper than a $1700 IP.
