Re:PE4x00 pump. Issues?
Thus far, we are aware of two issues with the PE pumps:

1) A faulty run of cartridges has caused some early failures of the PE4200 and 4100 pumps. PE has corrected this problem.

2) Improper fuel system design has caused some early failures. PE pumps cannot be installed at the tank where water impregnation can occur. Coating with waterproof substances may prolong pump life, but overheating can occur. The pumps _must_ be installed where water contact on wet roads is minimal. These pumps also cannot be installed with a pre-filter.

PE has temporarily suspended diesel operations, and are undergoing some trials. They intend to test several configurations, however they feel that a system which mounts the pump forward under the hood, utilizing the stock lines from the tank, and -8 lines from lift pump through to the VP44 will work fine. Bench testing will occur, and PE will develop a recommendation of how their pumps should be used on our trucks to ensure maximum life. They want to be part of our merry little band of misfit dieselheads, and as such, we will be working closely with them over the next few weeks to ensure that we can develop a system which will meet everyone's needs.

Rod
Re:PE4x00 pump. Issues?
I am the jinx to all fuel systems. :'(

Two Holley blacks and a PE 4200.

Several fuel pressure gauges and one factory lift pump.

Whats been working best for me is the Holley Blue with -8 from it to the filter housing and then no banjos from there to the VP-44 with braided teflon lines. On level 9 on the TST Powermax 3 Competition, Stage 3's, B1KS turbo and that Scotty Air System that Sucks COoooOoooooooL Air ;D , I have 10 psi at cruise, 7 WOT and it sits right at 12.5 at idle.

I have it mounted in the stock position and it has had 15,000 miles on it so far.

We had the PE 4200 mounted on a custom fabricated frame mount up under the drivers side floor. Very nice spot for avoiding road rash and moisture.

I'm not a fan of running a pre filter before a pump as it only creates more restriction [suction issues] and then you still gotta push the fuel through the factory filter.
I also try to steer away from running two pumps in a row.
I believe it would be very hard to match the pumps so that one either does not demand more then the first [stressing the last pump and possibly the first one too] and I don't like the idea of trying to push more fuel into a pump that might not be able to handle it the other way around.

Dang, I really went into ramble mode. CoooOOOooooL

Heres my conclusion...as long as you have good pressure and volume, not high pressures and bottle neck restrictions, you will probably have a longer lasting system. Of course there will be others with different views on this. So far what is working well for me is the Holley Blue combo. We never planned to try this, I needed a pump when the last Black pump failed and I got the Blue as a stop gap til I got something else. It turned out to be the most reliable ...so far.
Maybe tomorrow I will be posting it failed.
