P-Pump 24v questions
 

Ok, i have access to a 12v cummins and have toyed with the idea of p-pumping my 24v sometime in the future. Everything from the motor that i'll need is very very cheap (more like free). It's a BRAND new 12v crate engine that has been sitting in a steel mill a friend works at and his section of the mill said to scrap it even though its never been used. It must be nice to be able to throw things away like that. Now to my questions, its an industrial engine for some kind of piece of heavy equipment but it is from the mid 90's to late supposedly. Would an industrial 12v have the ppump in it i would need to do my truck with? And if so what all would i need off the 12v to do the conversion besides the pump and i'm guessing the timeing case too? I know i would need a better lift pump to supply the p-pump, i was thinking of a fass maybe. I know haisleys machine has the injector lines i need. What else is there?

Well your looking at a lot of work, for starters your going to need a automotive P pump the pump on a industral engine is a bit diffirent. Those engines are set to run at a set speed at lower HP's. Depending on the engine it is probaly rated for 120 to 145 hp there for your going to need bigger injectors. Your better of selling the engine as a whole, you could probly get a between 2,500 and 3,000 for it than go and buy your self some parts that will fit with no alterations and still have money to burn.

I wouldnt mess with your truck. Update the lift pump and buy the engine from the steel mill then resell it. You will be $ ahead with less headaches. Deals like that dont come around very often. I would jump on it. But I would not mess with your truck unless you wanted to race or pull it then still I dont think I would mess with it. Put the whole 12v in your truck that might be the ticket if you dont like your 24v.

Thanks for all the replies, i didn't know how much of a headache it would be to do this. I probably could do it fairly easily since i work on diesel everyday but if its not the right kind of pump i won't go ahead with p-pumping my truck. I was getting all the stuff off the engine or the whole engine for free so cost wasn't an issuse. Although i did find out for sure that the 12v was not industrial, it was a marine application instead. Anyways thanks .

Whatever you do, get the engine. Then find out if it will work later. Like was said above, it will bring 2,500-3,500 on E-bay easily.

I would think the marine engine would work for the conversion, if it will do it and never look back

I dont know about the whole industrial engine part of it BUT if you get the chance to p-pump your 24valver DO IT!!!! Its well worth every penny....But instead of going with a fass I would go with the mech lift pump its much more reliable. besides you have to pull the cam any way to swap front covers so might as well get a cam from haisleys while your ordering the lines.
