infancy mods...just finishing the KDP deal, and will be doing a timing advance as soon as i get my DV socket...

then onto the fuel plate, gov springs, and injectors..

opinions on injectors? go with 370's? honed?

there something out there that's better?

Not 370's. The spray patterns are wrong, giving them a tendency to surge. More than a few guys have had 370's and been driven crazy by the surging. I would go wit big DVs and some 215 injectors if you don't already have them.

 

Define surging. I have 370s, and I don't have any problems, except towing heavy at low speeds. low speeds like accelerating from a stop light. I just remedy that by giving it about 3/4 throttle. Any other time I drive, there is no noticeable difference between them, and the stock injectors, except I can burn the 35" tires into third gear with an auto.

 

Don't go with the Marines 370's, I had them and trust me, they arn't the best of injectors by a long shot. New Era diesel makes EDM'd 370's that have the correct spray patteren and won't surge, they also have 435's if you want to go bigger. Another good injector would be the DDP stage4.

 

Surging...

When the truck sort of bucks due to an inefficent spray pattern of the injectors. It will surge back and forth till you either back off the throttle, or you actually give it more.. Mine is pretty bad every so often, and it gets to me, to minimize it i take off in granny low..

So far as injectors go, Go with DDP4's or something EDM'd, or listen to what nick (DisplacedTexan) says. I have 370's and they will be on the market soon enough when I can afford DDP 4's.

what does EDM stand for?

does New Era Diesel make a 215 injector into a 370, or do they modify the 370 to work better?

pricing? i'll be eventually going with twins, so a good amount of fuel won't scare me.. 1000+ft lbs works for me...

EDM means electronic drilling method. I could think of a lot of better things to spend my money on than the difference of 300.00 for 370s, or 850 for edms.

 

You can get EDM'd 370's from New Era deisel for $380. Well worth it. Or 435's for $450 if you want to go bigger.

 

what is the difference between a standard 370 and a New Era EDM'd 370?? (performance wise..) does it eliminate the surging issue?

I have 370's from pier's diesel. Mine didn't add any surging when I installed them, but they haze some smoke at idle. With the concentration of waste oil I'm running (about 75%), they smoke blue a LOT at idle. I'm looking to go to a bigger injector that has the correct spray pattern for our pistons in the not-too-distant future.

I will say that the 370's REALLY bump power up over the stock ones though!

 

I don't mean to hijack your thread but I am looking at doing the same thing you are and I don't know what year truck you have, but if he has the 215 pump like I do would we benefit more from laser cut DV's with our stock 215's? Or the EDM'd 370's from New Era diesel?

I ran 370's from PDR for the last 3 years. I recently installed DDP 4's.
The 370's worked well but they do have some short comings. They tend to produce an exhaust haze and smell at idle, have some surge issues at low RPM (below about 1400) when you gently roll into the go-peddle, they start smoking at half go-peddle and induce solar eclipse at full go-peddle. They are a very cost effective HP gain though. The DDP 4's are rated at about 50HP more than 370's and run much smoother. My 370's idled very smooth as do the DDP4's. However, the DDP4's produce no vissible smoke at idle and the exhaust smell much less noticeable. They run as smooth as the stock 215 injectors did from off idle up through the revs both under gentle or hard acceleration. The smoke is very minimal under medium power and seems to be less than the 370's under full power. I cleaned the soot off my bumper prior to a weekend of towing with the DDP4's and was amazed at how little soot was deposited. The 370's would leave an order of magnitude more soot on the bumper under the same conditions. I have not driven enough to fairly comment on any mileage change between the two injectors. The driveability of the DDP4's is better around town as they run very smooth at light power and feel more responsive. Boost appears to be about 1 psi higher under light load driving with the DDP4's. If you are fussy about having a great running truck, I would buy an injector with the correct spray pattern. The 370's are great for the money, but do have some behavior issues. Can you live with a little bad behavior? I did and many still do. Driving above 1800 RPM keeps most of the 370's bad behavior in check. Would I pay the difference to buy DDP4's again - yes. Will I tell you not to buy 370's - no. But, if your budget allows, the more expensive injectors seem to work better. Just my $0.02 worth.

 

Sounds like I will have to double my budget and get the DDP 4's instead.. That sounds like more what I am after. I really don't want an injector that slobbers at idle as I do have to idle my rig for some periods on the job site..

 

Ditto on the 370's....I've run them for about 70-80K and they run fine, but they do sound kinda ratty between 1200-1800, kinda like bogging a gasser sound. I'm pretty much done with the idle haze and clouds of smoke below 10lbs of boost.

Great bang for the buck, but I'm doing the DDP4's as well, as soon as $$$ permits.
