NV 5600 to NV4500 Swap ???

On a 2001 2500 that came with the six speed can I swap backwards to the 4500 transmission if I use an 1 3/8 input? I know I will have to lengthen/shorten the driveshafts but otherwise will it bolt up? My 5600 crappped out with 140,000 miles, I don't tow too heavy or have more than 350 hp at most and with no other apparent issues it just went to crap. The best price I can find is about $3000 for a used NV5600. Mine has all internals except 5th and 6th gears messed up and they want $4000 to rebiuld it. I can get an upgraded 4500 for half that I think and they don't seem to randomly die from lubrication issues like the 5600. Any suggestions?? Thanks Blair

It will bolt up fine...you'll need to lengthen the rear drive shaft and shorten the front, and maybe shorten the t-case shifter linkage. Everything else should be the same!

I think I'd get somebody to rebuild the old one. $4,000 sounds high to me.

$4000 is a rebuild on the old one. Apparently it needs a new mainshaft all gears except 5th and 6th and all bearings and syncros. I am not too happy right now. But everywhere I have talked to is about the same price. So I don't know what to do.
REF>Lancer do you remember what yard that was? I would appreciate it if you did and maybe a phone number! Thanks Blair

Man, I just rebuilt my NV 4500 for like $1300, New shafts, everything except for the gears themselves. $4000 is rape.

They don't make parts for the 5600 anymore. Thats why I changed my mind on wanting one...

Yes, the 4500 will bolt right in. And aside from the obvious driveshaft lengths and transfercase rod length, just make sure you use a 1-3/8 input shaft.

I work at a diesel repair shop, but we don't do any trans rebuilds there (installs only), and we still get at least one call per week of people and even Dodge dealers looking for replacement 5600's. The core supply has dried up alot even the rebuilders have slim pickings. New Venture quit making parts quite a while ago, that's why we're in this situation.
Blumenthalls tells me they're going to start producing their own replacement parts, but still unknown when.
