New sound system for my 2001, HELP me pick?

I am looking at replacing the factory head unit with an in dash dvd (single din flip-up) stereo. I also want to replace the speakers as the factory sound like crap. I don't think I have the Infinity system as it doesn't say Infinity anywhere on the head unit or speakers? I do have a-piller tweeters though and the cd/cassete head unit with 3 way equalizer is this the Infinity? What I'd like from you guys who have replaced your systems with good aftermarket stuff is what I need to for a clean install and good sounding system. I'll probably start with replacing the head unit and front speakers, and the rest as money permits. i'd like to know what sizes and brands i should use for the front doors, and back doors. I'm familiar with stereos but unfamiliar with this truck. HELP?

I'm partial to Alpine myself. I'm running their head unit and one of their amps and I am very pleased with it. Nice clean sound. I recommend going with a 6.5" component up front and mounting the tweeters in the existing holes in the pillars. Go with a 6.5" 2 way replacement speaker in the rears. Like I said, Alpine makes some great stuff that sounds good and doesn't break the bank. If not, then look into the infinity reference or kappa line up of speakers. Polk makes some good ones to as that's what I'm running. Do some searching on here and you should be able to find out some more info.

I didn't think the 6.5" fit in front, Crutchfield says 5.25". Thanks for the info.

It's a 6x9 hole in the door, 6.5's fit great with a home made baffle, and there is plenty of room behind the door panel.

Thanks, anybody else have any suggestions for speakers? How do I know I have the infinity system?

Stamey 04-10-2006 10:18 PM

If you have tweeters in the pillars it's the Infinity, the CHEAPEST Infinity possible. The stock premium sound system in my 96 is in better shape than my 99, with the "Infinity" sound system.

Caution, it is my understanding that the amps ON the front speakers with the Infinity sound system also power the rear speakers. [eyecrazy] This means that if you replace the front speakers 1. you will not have much power, if any, for the rear speakers, and 2. you may not be able to power new front speakers without an amp for those front speakers.
I have been mulling over this myself as my 99 left front channel works when it wants to, randomly.

I agree with BigBlue, go Alpine for the HU and any amps you might want. I dont recommend Alpine for speakers though. I put Type-Rs in my car, coaxials in the rear and components in the front and I am less than impressed with them. I do have Alpine HeadUnits in my Truck, car and Jeep and I Love them, also Alpine Amps in the truck and car. I went with Polk Audio's in the Dodge and it sounds pretty sweet. Just get the best Headunit (most output) you can afford if you are not going with an amp.

Anybody have pics of an in dash DVD head unit in a Ram? Wondering if it will clear the overhang above the stereo?

Thanks for the offer, but I would like to have the sat. radio option. thanks anyway though. So the screen will clear the dash overhang no problem, cool.

MB Quart speakers are the best!!

JL Audio makes a sub box that replaces the center console seat with a single 12" sub.

Mglass1045 04-11-2006 05:46 PM

MB's are good but I'm partial to Boston Acoustics(If you can afford them). I was highly impressed with Audiobahn components. It wasn't their high end stuff some really cheap stuff off of Ebay, but sounded great for a cheap set. It's all a matter of personal preference. I would suggest listening to anything and everything you can. Also put a little Dynamat down on the doors when you replace the speakers. It'll be a night and day difference.

I got a Alpine head unit and JL Audio amp and speakers including the center seat subwoofer for both my '95 and '01 trucks and I am pleased with them.
