Lock Up Switch
Does anyone here have a torque converter lock up switch in their truck? I am just wondering how exactly they work. Also in the near future (when i get enough saved up) I plan on a t/c maybe with a lock up switch, shift kit, and redone valve bodies? Is that right? So if it is what needs done to the valve bodies? Thanks for the help.
I'm using a lockup switch. (On very rare occasions) With a stock auto it's gonna probably kill the tranny.(I'm using it strictly under low load conditions to get better speed control without having to either ride the brake or downshifting manually)
A shift kit is modifying the valve body- so you either do a shift kit or buy the VB.
As for the TC- the TC can be seen in 2 operating modes- fluid coupling and lockup. In lockup it's only important that it doesn't slip with the torque you have or plan on having. With the fluid coupling it gets trickier. You'll have to match the characteristics to your engine's torque curve. So what's good for Jack might be bad for Joe and that's one of the reasons why you see tranny wars on the forums. If you want to buy a TC I'd suggest calling all the vendors and talk to them to see where your impression is that they'll fit your style and budget best.

what do u want the switch for? performance?? then thats a bad idea...when ur locked under 1600rpms do u not feel that slight shake or shudder? well thats not enough line pressure... i can see a use for it to DELAY lockup so that it occurs at higher rpms when you're "lightfooting" it through town so that u dont have it constantly trying to lockup at or under 1500rpm...right now i use the overdrive on/off swicth to get that done to a degree...i'll drive with overdrive button off (meaning all four gears are on) and when i get decent rpm but before 4th gear engages i pop the button and i get the softest lockup ever....i like that
if u mod ur tranny or u have a fresh torque converter with a very strong lockup clutch then u can give it a shot i suppose...good luck! u can always try it...see if u like it...u'll KNOW when its stressin ur tranny almost instantly

I have a three position switch in mine. Lockup, normal or unlocked. Lockup for temp control on open road when towing, unlock for in town traffic to ease load on TC, but you have to watch your temps closely. I also have a billet upgraded clutch TC and a modified valve body for increased line pressure at lower RPM. Be very carefull with a stock unit and don't shift in lockup or bad ju ju!!
