Intake upgrades
 

What options are there for upgrading the intake? I am leaning toward building a box similar to the AFE mega cannon, and using a big paper element, but I don't know what other options exist, or how effective my idea would be.

I woud purchase a stand alone filter for the Megacannon setup like the proguard 7. Then fab up and use it with your homemade box.

I have tried many combinatios. So far the Scotty 2 is the best with EGT reduction.

all available intakes on the market today have their shortcomings - the scotty may suck cooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooool air, but it uses an oil/gauze filtering element that does not meet Cummins OEM requirements for filtering.
-BHAF sucks air from the engine compartment (heated air) and that is not good - but at least the air is filtered.
-the AFE proguard7 takes a mix of "cool" air and engine compartment air (intake system) and flows about 680 CFM at 1.5" H2O
-the megacannon/force also does not filter to OEM specs

can't someone make an intake that flows around 900 CFM, sucks cool air, and filters @ OEM specs (~>99%) ::)

For those with the Mega Cannon, what type of material is the "edge Trim" that they use on their box? Can anyone tell me the dimensions of their box. I am planning to build it out of stainless steel or aluminum, to add a nice touch to the engine compartment.

ps If anyone wants me to weld them one after I am done with mine, let me know, and we can work something out. (I am certified with TIG)

The OEM filter and box leak so much crap its a surprise there aren't more failiers. Any of the aftermarket filters filter way better then stock.



Is the AFE filter safe on my Cummins engine?

Yes it is. So far anyone that has reported their oil analysis to us has noted that the silicon (dirt) levels are very low even on highly modified engines.

No one has ever had a dirt related failier on any of our modded trucks because of an oiled scotty filter

Am considering the afe proguard 7 as an upgrade to my 03 HO.
?? Is it worth the costs ie performance, mpg etc??
How much, if any, noise over stock? ???

Just out of curiosity, has anyone used one of these ProGuard filters in their MegaCannon and compared it against the standard aFe MegaCannon filter? What sort of EGT differential did you see? We'll be testing the ProGuard versus standard aFe filters in our [CENSORED] this winter, but I also like to get some street feedback.

We're not getting too terribly excited about the ProGuard, since the standard aFe filter has a rated efficiency within .6% of the stocker paper element, and after dozens of oil analyses, we have yet to see one case where the standard aFe didn't as good a job of filtration as the stocker element. We don't need better filtration than stock, but we do need every bit of air (coooooolllll ;D) that we can get our mitts on.

I replaced an AFE filter with a marine BHAF a year ago, because the summer dust out here on the salt flats of Utah-Nevada was getting through & onto the black rubber surface of the intake hose. No leaks, put the stuff under a microscope, good old pulverized salt & Lake Bonneville fines.

Clogged the BHAF with dust this past summer, so I put the AFE back on for a month (after cleaning it). Replaced it with an AFE Proguard 7 two months ago.

Seat-of-the-pants: no change in power. At all. Turbo screams louder than with old AFE. (Verified by wife)
Science: +0.6 to 1 mpg over 1387 miles. No dust traces in the intake hoses despite over 400 miles on unpaved desert & salt pan roads.

Hope it helps. I DO need filtration, so maybe it doesn't help you. How about offering a choice between the two?

We definitely will be on the new system, and if aFe gets their act together and releases the 40044 and 40043 in a ProGuard series, then we will offer it on the old systems as well.

Just out curiosity, did you ever do an oil analysis when you had the aFe in it? I'm wondering how much difference it made to the engine if particles that fine made it into the air flow.

Yes, I did two with the AFE & one with the BHAF. One with the AFE & the one with the BHAF were done when most of the driving had been in winter (less dust). The BHAF had a little better silicon count, not enough to make a difference, IMO. The second test on the AFE was done in October, after a summer of driving in the drought & dust. The AFE count was much higher than in winter, up there but not -real- high, no warnings. Not sure how valuable this info is without a BHAF summer analysis for comparison. If you want, I'll see if I can dig up the numbers.

AFE's a good filter, better than the K&N RE-0880 I tried first. I took that one off after three days. :P

I'll pm you when I do an analysis with the PG7, if you want.

I'd really appreciate that. The more data we can get our mitts on, the better off we (and our customers) are. ;D
