I used a teflon pipe sealing compound I got at the local farm store. It is rated for fuels, oils, and gas, and comes in a small plastic tube. It was stocked by the black Iron fittings and Natural Gas valves. I read not to use teflon tape, as it can deteriorate and send small particles through the system if the pieces are able to get loose. The stuff is pretty messy if used too much, and seems to stick to anything!
I also read that if brass fittings are used, we really don't need any pipe sealant on them, since the brass is soft enough to seal well enough on its own. I had one fitting I had to constantly remove and install while I adjusted my bypass regulator, and I didn't put new sealant on it everytime. It is not leaking at all, and was pretty well cleaned off of sealant by the time I did final assembly of the system.
