a HX40?

A guy I know has what I believe is an HX40 that he wants to sell me. The shaft bearings are shot and both the compressor wheel and turbine wheel has some wear on them. The turbine wheel doesn't look that bad as I took everything apart tonight to really look it all over. I know it will need a new compressor wheel and a rebuild kit. I took everything apart except for the actual bearings. Bead blasted the parts the Holset manual says you can and generally cleaned it all up.
The wheel looks to be about $70 to replace and the rebuild kit is $54 locally. Would a price of $300 be a good deal? I feel comfortable rebuilding it and the local shop here can supply me with parts.

The only reason I am looking to upgrade is I do ALOT of towing and recently upgraded from a 3 inch straight to a complete 4 inch exhaust. My EGT's didn't drop that much and still easily get it into the yellow. This HX40 has a clamp style connector on the back and I can weld up my new exhaust to fit it and have no bottleneck as it is with my HY35.

So my questions are:
Will this turbo cool everything down? I understand the HX40 might be a little laggy, but I need the temp and power while cruising, not for jack rabbit starts. My HY35 has a hard line and it will be much easier to put a boost elbow in on this one.
Will I see more power from this turbo? I am looking at a small box(EZ or VA) and then a set of 275's. If I end up doing the transmission soon, I will really want a Comp.
This turbo is suppose to be some aftermarket upgrade but I don't see anyones name on it besides Holset so I am not really convinced it is some big name turbo, any other way to tell? The data plate is missing from the compressor housing so I am having to find part numbers and hunt around to get information.

Any other things to consider??

Thanks guys,
Chris

If it were me I wouldnt pay $300 for an HX40 in that condition. If it is a stock 40, more than likely it is, it will be laggey compared to what you are used to, but it will work and will drop your EGT's a considerable amount over the HY.

I agree. Its not that expensive of a turbo anyway. I would not pay $300 for this one.

I paid WAY to much for a HX40 a while back. It worked OK with stock injectors with no fuel added. Once I put the delivery valves in, 2 days later it died a horrible death.

I wouldn't pay $50 for an HX40.

I personally wouldn't run a Hx-40 on anything with more than maybe a set of injectors and a slight fuel plate modification. Truck in my sig had a Hx-40 and it was okay until the laser cuts went in and the plate was ground to a 100. The turbo lasted about two weaks and snapped the shaft. Now have a B-1 and it's a much sturdier turbo.(IMO)

It was on a Dyno run. Hit about 49psi and boom there it went.

That's just it I don't like to depend on luck.

I'm very happy with my brand new stock hx40, , 2 years and 35k miles on it now with the setup below, about 410hp/911tq. I'm no hotrod though. Easy shifting, slow thru the gears and keep the boost low for fuel economy.
I drive wide open a lot of the time and I imagine I just blew the bearings.. The compressor blades were contacting the housing and it was just stuck.. Then enough backpressure built and started to spin it

Haven't blown my PDR 40, and i haven't been easy on it. I check it at every oil change, and it still feel like new. I do let it cool off before shutdown. Has seen up to 45# of boost a few times. Not normally over 30# though. With the bumped timing (16*, vs. the stock 14*), and even with the new DDP4s, I haven't seen over 40#, yet.
