I used to do a lot of engine building and I imagine a Cummins crank must weigh far more than 100 lbs.

yes, the duramax has aluminum heads/cast iron block. 837lbs dry weight. dmax crank is around 80 lbs IIRC, so yes I would imagine a ctd crank is well over 100 lbs.

what about putting a 24v crank in a 12 v engine arent they a lot lighter and maybe help performance?

Same crank, other than the 98-00 cranks have a tone ring on them for the crank position sensor.
