How To Get 22MPG on the HWY???

Well I have taken all the GO FAST Parts off my truck and will possibly be selling it in the next few months. But, if I dont sell it, with the price of fuel I would like to get advice on pure effeciency. So driving habits aside.......

This is what first comes to mind.

SMARTY on 1 or fuel saver or
QUAD's new box set to timing only

F1 Mach 1's or
RV275's

Gear Vendors Unit

I know these are just the mechanical things but I will have to change driving habits

How much would have to be done to instal a gear vendors unit?

TheBigNasty 05-28-2007 11:52 AM

I don't believe the GV will get you and significant increase in mpg. I don't know how the mach 1's run but BigBlue said out of all the inj he has ever run the 275's were the best for mileage.

Crazydave 05-28-2007 11:54 AM

Try switching everything to synethic oil. I have not yet but will soon i hear it helps and since i put rv 275's in and have been running an ez and an ottomind my mileage has gone up. Mixed city and Hwy (more Hwy) and still stepping on it the last 2 tanks have been 18 - 18.5. Going out to IRP this week hoping to break 20. Good luck

propane worked for me, 2 to 7 mpg increase [coffee]

Detune it to see only a lite haze at wot - black smoke is unburned fuel, as is white vapors - stay off wot at all times, setup for rpm at 1700-1800 at 65mph, limit max mph to 65, synthetic lubes may help, qt\40gal ashless 2-stroke motor oil may help, hiway tread pattern helps

But isn't that just supplimenting one fuel with another?
Your Diesel Mileage increases because you're burning an alternate fuel?

natlchamp2k4 05-28-2007 02:21 PM

Yeah, No propane, thats just another fuel that I have to buy.

I knew the 275's were effecient and people usually see 1-1.5 mpg but I figured that F1 would build a really clean small injector. But the 275 would be alot cheaper.

What are the thoughts on the computer side?

SMARTY

Quad's Timing only box

EZ

Thanks,
Jamie

Drive 60mph max and you'll see 22mpg.

I did a 300 mile freeway road trip, half of which was through construction with a 55mph speed limit.
I stayed 60 throughout the construction zone(really hard to stay 55 when traffic is going 65), rest of the trip was 75mph average.
My mileage for the whole trip was 20mpg.
If the whole distance was under construction, I'm sure I would have gotten at least 22mpg.
Normally I get around 16mpg average.

-RV275's
-Get rid of the Ranch Hand Front Bumper
-Since you have 9" wheels, you can probably stay with 285's but run all 4 at max pressure.
-Smarty on Fuel Economy... Maybe?
-Keep boost under 10 psi at all times
-All windows closed anytime over 40 mph and Fan Only....no A/C! Good luck with that one in Lubbock. :)

Jamie,

Just a couple of other things come to mind.. Did you re-calibrate your computer for your larger tires? How much air do you run in your tires? Also, when I swapped out my vulcan relo kit for a FASS system, my millage went up some.

Also, are you thinking about your intact and exhaust systems? Some claim those also improve fuel millage some.

It is the small things that seem to improve your milliage.

Good Luck,

Joe

Slow down. Speed goes down, mileage goes up.

That the thing: you just can't put aside driving habits. Even if a truck was CAPABLE of 30mpg, it's going to have to be driven a certain way to achieve that, right?

Here's what I'd do for mpg:
1) tire pressure set at 65f/60R for stock tires running empty
2) Mach 1 injectors. Even cleaner than 275s and awesome mpg. The BEST mpg injector I know of.
3) Synthetics in axles. A 75w-90 doesn't give any mpg increase over a 75w-140 that I can tell (done both), so go thick for protection with the syn.
4) Synthetic in tranny-- but most approved tranny fluids are syn already.
5) Some kind of timing box or programming: Smarty, EZ, etc..
6) finally the most important mpg tip of all:
SLOW DOWN
"Road hp" or that power it takes to maintain a certain speed goes up roughly as the cube of speed. What does that mean? DOUBLING SPEED TAKES EIGHT TIMES MORE POWER.

This increased power demand is why mpg drops off so far with speed.

Our trucks are most efficient between 1600 and 2000 rpm, so keep it in that range. Ideally, you'd be in top gear at 1600rpm, as that's best overall for mpg, accounting for wind drag.

Other options will also improve MPG, but never show a $$ gain-- propane is one, a larger turbo is another, and so is the manual hub conversion from Dynatrac and such.

I know that slowing down and driving "right" is the key to better mpg. That might be more important than the injectors and electronics. Thanks for the input and keep it coming.

I thought it was increase "Squared"??

I havent recalibrated my speedo, the dealership they would do it for $70. I do all my milage by hand and since the factory size is 265 and I run a 285 I calculate in a 7% increase in miles traveled.

Thanks for the input guys.

RJ, there WILL be AC while im here in Lubbock, that would just be torture on a trip. I dont know how they did it in the good ole days, I guess they were just flat tougher that we are??
