HO software upgrade

Has anyone tried flashing the standard output software on the automatic equipped Cummins to the HO software used on the 6 spd standard trans. Since the Dodge PCM controls the trans and the Cummins ECM controls the engine, does the engine reconize the fact that it has an auto trans? If not i am thinking you could increase your HP/Torque output to the HO specs with just a flash. ???

Re:HO software upgrade

I dunno how much that would help as there is a physical injector pump difference also. I'm not sure of all the details, but my understanding is the HO VP44 runs a little higher pressure to the injectors.

Re:HO software upgrade

that is a possibility that there is a physical difference between the two injector pumps. Since most add on box's add HP/torque by controlling any injector pump, would't the HO software do the same? ???

Re:HO software upgrade

I won't say you are wrong, because that's a little beyond my knowledge, but I do know that HO engines do not respond as well to add-on boxes. This could point to a software difference, but I can't tell you for sure.

No doubt that a add on box will do a lot more in the power dept. I am wondering if this could be a short term, poor man's upgrade until an add-on can be afforded.

Re:HO software upgrade

I think you might have a hard time finding someone who will do an HO reflash on a SO motor. From what I understand, a SO w/ a fueling box makes more power than a stock HO too.

What does it cost to get the truck "flashed"? I, like most people here, want to get the most out of my truck for the cheapest $$$ possible.

Re:HO software upgrade

Yep, the HO injection pump puts out a few thousand more psi than the SO version of the VP44. That is why SO's respond better to fueling boxes and HO trucks respond better to larger injectors.

Re:HO software upgrade

sorry to burst your bubble but if you have a so there is no way you can make it a ho unless you change the pistons and oil pump that sprays the pistons....

Re:HO software upgrade

I believe compression ratios are 16:1 in so and 17:1 in ho motors.

Don't confuse your 03 motor with his 02 motor.

Re:HO software upgrade

You can buy the Torquis Maximus ECM upgrade to get those "Specs" but I doubt you will find someone willing to do the flash you seek.

Re:HO software upgrade

Your compression ratio differences are correct.C/R is higher in the HO. As far as finding the guy to flash the controller,I already ask him in the mirror this morning, and he said it would be no problem. He did wonder however if the Cummins ECM will see the auto trans on the software. I suppose i could experiment by trying it and seeing what happens. If i fry the ECM it could be a real pain trying to explain why. There is a flash recovery procedure should the ECM become brain dead.

Re:HO software upgrade

Well, ask the guy in the mirror again to do it and let us know the results on it. ;D
