Safely, about 300-350 depending on elevation and what you use the truck for.

You start to really need more air about 350, when you push 400 it is a must.

I ran HY-35 at 390rwhp mark for two years, yes the egt's are crazy but I could still tow a 10k trailer thru the mountains. The pistons looked good when I took the stock head off.

I did a somewhat suspicious 390/918 on the stocker.

Methinks the dyno guys were dreaming again and using std SAE factors for my high elevation.

This was with EZ and DD2s.

I've since gone to Mach 4s and a Smarty with the stocker. Yes, I'm overfueled. No, I don't mind

I wouldn't too big on the injector unless your gonna buy a new turbo. Melted pistons suck man and its kinda like a big job to pull the motor and rebuilding it. But on the other hand I ran 3X3 and luved it with 100rwhp injectors. The engine didn't seem to hate it either. My HY turbo kinda like melted down and was slow to spool. Heck its only money.

Well, I know of a guy who dynoed 425hp with a stocker and he's since installed even bigger injectors. It's an 01. He's very hard on his truck and does some pretty heavy towing but that turbo seems to hold up somehow.

Hx35

What would go wrong with the stock turbo? By stock, do you mean factory boost settings? Are these people going to 300-400 hp with factory boost settings? I have the HX35 and I built a boost controller and when I installed it the boost was about 31 psi. I ran it for a short time like that, but then turned it down to 23 psi. With no mods it was running 19 psi already. Also, I read that if you go over 400 hp then more air (turbo upgrade) is a must. Why is it a must? Do you need more psi? I read that the HX35 is capable of 38 psi or maybe more. The information is much appreciated. Thanks.

You need a bigger turbo because the HX35 just can't physically supply enough air. You could boost it to 100psi if ya wanted but it still wouldn't be able to supply enough air for 400hp. 31-35 psi is about the peak boost you need to get out of an HX35 because anything over that is just hot air and isn't doing any good. FWIW, with my stock HY35 at 40psi of boost I could peg 1500* by 55mph. Upgraded to a KSB-1 turbo and at 40 psi I can barely tickle 1250*. Same boost pressure but the KSB-1 can physically flow a LOT more air than the HY35 could ever dream of. Same thing with an HX35 (which is a slightly bigger version of the HY35).

I've got an EZ and DD2s in my 99 SO and the best it could do at the last dyno event was this.

The top three runs were with the EZ and DD2s and the bottom three runs were with a barrowed Smarty (no timing) added. I actually lost hp and only gained a few ftlbs of tq with the Smarty. Needless to say, we decided I didn't need the Smarty.

I put down 440/961 out in Indy last year on a stock Hx-35 in my 99 5spd
With a set of Don's 2.5's and a Drag comp tapped but it got very hot.

You should have a solid 330-350hp with DD2s and EZ. Since you didn't break 300, I'd say you have some other problems with the rig, and that's why the Smarty didn't deliver the goods.

Pump might be getting a little weak. I know that when my Vp started dying, power was down.

I'd certainly not be happy with <300hp from that combo, and start looking at what might be wrong.

Heck, most guys who dyno are 300rwhp are only running 275s with their EZ, not a MUCH larger stick like the DD2s.
