headache rack
 

Anybody got any preferences for a headache rack for an 03 CTD? Need some to occasionally haul a ladder.

make your own? find a welder, it could wind up being cheaper than an aftermarket one...plus it'll be different.

If you do a search on headache racks on the net you will come up with quite a few places that make them but for me those above are the final contenders.

I don't remember who made the one I had but I know it cost me under $200. Ranchhand makes some extremely nice headache racks but by the time shipping was added into the picture I was looking at $500 for one of theirs. If you have a welder and chop saw I would recomend making your own, that way you get what you want.

I have looked and looked for a special design rack and have not been able to find it.
What I am looking for is a rack that I can mount my Taylor wing on when we pull our trailer. I want to be able to drop a couple of pins in and the wing is mounted. Also my does not or lets say I dont want the louvers on mine. It makes it harder to wash the back window. I seen one a couple of years ago that the owner used the mounting brackets and pins from big truck mud flaps to mount his wing..I do have the Taylor rack for the wing but I want this rack so that I can remove the wing when I am not towing but keep the rack in place.
Ok folks...I need suggestions...May just have to go visit my friend @ his steel yard for supplies to make my own..

Agreed you are better off making your own... Made mine for about $40. :)

alright, here's the one my dad made for his chevy. it's built so that a Turbo Wing can mount to it, and be taken off (dad didn't want to bolt it to the roof). the first one was built like mine...where the posts go to the bottom of the bed to add stability. but with the wing on, it flexed too much and squeaked ont he top of the roof (even after adding pads, etc.). so he made up that one where it has the braces going back like a gator....also got an in-bed toolbox to fit and got rid of the delta like i have.

just some ideas like you want..

and here it is on the truck. (yeah, i whooped him ;D ). he made some custom brackets that bolt to the wing. and there's two piece of flat stock welded into the headboard about 1"X3" or so. 4 pins and there ya go...nice and sturdy. and yes, that's light pewter metallic with clearcoat that he put on ;).

What I have:
Works well, built well, I'd rather go to work for a couple of hours and buy this than work for half a day making one. They don't look too hillbilly either (no offense to anybody who considers themselves a hillbilly)

btw, just a quick neat thought, since there's no hooks up front and with the bars going down the bottom of the bed (on my truck), i simply had him weld two links of chain on both sides---so i now have something to tie to down and up front.

i'd be interested in making my own headache rack. what kinda metal did you use? Does anybody have a picture of a truck with a headache rack and stacks? i wanted to run stacks eventually but i'm afraid it might look too "busy" with a headache rack.
