Gov arm adjustment correct? / pic

I ground a 100 plate (I set it 3/4 the way forward), and moved the AFC almost full forward and had a lull in power down low, so I was thinking the arm was going under the plate or somthing, so I checked today. Had the ignition on, selenoid up and then moved the throttle linkage about 1/4 the way open and the arm hit about where the j-hook on the 100 plate meets the flat part going up the plate. First question is, is it normal for only 1/4 throttle to have the arm hit the plate? I heard people saying u need to open it full throttle. Second, I moved the plate full forward instead of adjusting the arm so it would hit lower, and in the pic is where it hit with 1/4 throttle, it looks right, it sits right above the lip of the 100 plate. But if I open the throttle linkage full the arm moves up and hits the flat part but doesn't slide up, is that right? It made a difference in power, I didn't notice the lull and it seemed alot more responsive throughout the rpm range with no smoke unless I punch full throttle

Nice pic. It looks like the arm is hitting just right. If you think it comes on too strong you can adjust it to hit lower on the ramp. You can also tweak the starwheel to control pre-boost smoke levels. I'd say leave it where it's at and have some fun with it.

The governor arm won't move up the plate without the governor spinning. So the procedure you are doing is correct. The arm only contacts halfway on the fuel plate, the other half is on the AFC arm. You might want to check when you put the AFC back in that it doesn't rub hard against the plate. The friction between the AFC and the plate made mine jumpy on low boost. The lul in power may be due to simple tuning of the AFC position, zero boost screw and AFC spring tension..

AFC seemed to slide in without any friction. I'm still alittle cofused why I don't have more smoke (not that I really want it), but with a 100 plate full forward, and AFC close to full forward the only time I get smoke is on Full throttle, and it clears after a couple seconds of boost. Is that just how the 160 pumps react? I kinda like it how it is because I can lay a cloud whenever I want, but I was just expecting there to be some low/no boost smoke. I had the starwheel all the way loose, and didn't really notice a difference.

Other than a gsk I think my pump is ready to feed some injectors, dv's and a bigger turbo, lol, eventually.

I guess this didn't really solve my powerband problem. I still have a lull down low and not great up top. Between 1600-2100 is prime time power, but below or above doesn't seem that great. Anybody have any suggestions for getting rid of that lull on the low end? I ordered a gsk for the top end, but i'd really like to have the same pull from 1300-1600. I might move the fuel plate back alittle from full forward to get back some milage (because the power increase wasn't much), I got 17mpg this last tank and usually get 19 easily.

It sounds like you are still a little to low. Raise it up about a 1/4 turn and take it for a ride. I use my boost gauge to set mine. If I am over 34 lbs I am to low if I am under I am to high. I have mine set so I boost 34 lbs it fuels boosts all the way through the rpm range.

Box5:

Without the GSK your truck starts to defuel around 2300 rpm that's probably why you notice it dropping off. The 3K GSK would remedy that very easily.

A set of 181 or 191 DV's would give you better bottom end or setting the governor arm to start deeper into the profile would help.

Try the GSK first and then see if you want the DV's. That can really heat things up quick.

thanks, Im gonna move the 100 plate back close to the middle today (that will move the gove arm up the ramp some, and I wanna see how it drives like that, if I don't like it i'll put it back to about 3/4 forward where it seemed to be a good median. Then save up for some future big mods like a turbo, dvs, and injectors (or a 215 pump if I find one cheap).

Well I put the plate back to about the middle posistion and didn't notice any loss is power. I'll have to drive it some more to really tell, but the lull was smoothed out alot compared to when I moved it full forward. Once I put the gsk in i'll have a better feel for what I want. I hope the gsk is a drastic improvement in drivability like everyone says.
