Gauge mount question

I have a 2001 with 5sp and have been trying to decide where to mount 3 gauges. I know the pillar is a popular location, and there is always the dash top mount and the Rods Pod, but was thinking about something a littel different. Has anyone seen gauges mounted towards the bottom of the dash, below the cubby hole under the radio. I know there is not a lot of room between the shifter boot and the dash but I can't seem to find anyone around here that has a dash pod that I could hold up there and see if it fits... and I hate to have to buy one just to see.

Also, leaning towards the ISSPRO EV for the EGT, Boost and FP (probably using an isolator) .

thanks, Roy

Re:Gauge mount question

The only problem I see with bottom of the dash is having to take your eyes off the road and look down to check the readings.

Isspro EVs are sweet.
Mechanical Fuel Pressure (no isolator) with stainless steel braided line mounted on dash. No Leaks.

Ed

Re:Gauge mount question

I like the pillar mount. Got my FP, Boost, EGT there. Real easy to read at a quick glance. I've got digital gauges though.

Re:Gauge mount question

I agree that putting the gauges down that far will take more effort to read the gauges and take your eyes off the road.

The Isspro EV's are a good choice. I run the FP Mechanical gauge without the SS braided line and have not had any leaks. I used refrigerator water hose. No isolater necessary.

The SS hose transmits sound into the cab. Didn't like that and pulled it out. Make sure you run a shutoff valve at the banjo bolt in case of a leak.

-CM

Re:Gauge mount question

I've got both,Triple A-pillar and a Rod Pod, guages in both. I would have a hard time saying which one works the best, they both work awesome. Both hold the guages at eye level or just out of your line of site. I would have a very hard time having to look down towards the bottom of the dash to see my guages. At 50/60 mph, to much happens in the amount of time it takes to look down.

A-pillar works great if you don't want to cut your dash bezel, Rod Pod works awesome if you need a place for a couple of switches along with a guage or two.

cmckinney,
I've done two things to eliminate the noise.
A: This needle valve closed almost all the way, reduces the "Hammer Effects" and eliminate the buzz.

B: I zip-tied the SS braided line to the wiring harness in the engine compartment, and zip-tied a couple of long pieces of foam rubber to insulate the line from all the contact points under the dash.

No Buzz.

Re:Gauge mount question

As usual the obvious is overlooked, I didn't think about taking my eyes off the road, I was just thinking about how it would look. I like the pillar I just wish I could see one in person, having seen some discussion here about the "in your face effect" has me concerned about the top gauge. I guess I'll have to order one and hold it up there. Worst case I sell it off.

Shovelhead, did you get the needle valve with your gauges? I see the link to WildcatDiesel, that where you got them from?

NOTE: I just re-read my own post, thought I might clear it up... I was the one that overlooked the obvious result of taking my eyes off the road, sorry for any confusion I may have caused....

Re:Gauge mount question

I have my tranny temp gauge installed at the bottom of my dash, next to my brake controller. The area just forward of the t-case shifter. The pillar is already full of gauges and Rod's pod is more work than I cared for. I know it's not the best/safest spot for the gauge but it is the least active gauge compared to EGT, boost, and FP. So that's why I put it down there. It's done, it works, and I'm not going to worry about it. However, I wouldn't put a full set of gauges in that spot, or one of the other types of gauges that I am constantly monitoring such as the EGT, boost, or FP.

Shovelhead, where did you get the stainless braided line from? I am going to run an Isspro ev mechanical gauge, and I want to get a line setup like you have.
Thanks Jason

Re:Gauge mount question

I had three gauges on the pillar mount and was not happy with the installation. They looked good up there but when you get older and have to wear bifocals it makes it difficult to focus in on them without bobbing your head up and down. There was another problem with them that my passanger didn't like. I have Westec gauges and the light inside them is on the left side and it is very bright to the passenger. I hooked them up to the dimmer wire and it helped a little.

I now have a dash pod I made. I found a piece of thin aluminum square tubing that I was able to modify similar to the Rod's Pod. Mine holds four gauges, ten switches and seven pilot lights. I found a paint at Walmart that matches the bezel very close. It is a black bed liner spray they have. It has just enough texture to almost match perfectly.

Barry
