Fuel Plates (first timer)
 

I have a 96 Cummins with a gutted cat. Everything else is stock. I have 215K kms and recently put a 270 hp BD fuel plate in and reset the valves. The tranny is an auto. I use the truck rarely for towing, except a couple quads, snowmobiles or 4x4ing.<br><br>Information on this site seems to be leading me to want to purchase a set of guages and pyro. I will be doing this soon. In the meantime, is it alright to be running it without.<br><br>Are there things I should be concerned about using this plate? Are there other changes I should be making to prevent future headaches? i.e. turbine housing, tranny, injectors

Since you already have a plate I would definately get the pyrometer and EGT guage in ASAP. Whenever you do a fuel mod you always want to have an EGT because more fuel equals more heat.<br><br>Other than that if the plate is the only mod you have then you'll be fine with a nice set of guages...making sure to include a tranny temp guage since you have a slush box ;) [laugh]

Be sure to get the gauges in before you do ANY towing with the truck.<br>Bruce

Ditto what the other guys said. With the plate, your EGTs will go up much faster than stock. You will probably want to upgrade your air intake.<br><br>If you catch the bug hard, then you'll be looking at 3K governor springs next. A shift kit will make higher rpm shifts, increase line pressure, and let the stock clutches and bands hold a little more power.<br><br>Consider turbo mods somewhat costly and only necessary if really pouring the fuel in. Injectors will give you a kick in the seat of the pants and decrease mileage. Turning up the timing to about 15.5 degrees will give more power, gain mileage and a little more engine noise.<br><br>Although not neccessary below 350hp, a 4 inch exhaust system will sound really good and lower EGTs some.

I was just wandering what woes it mean when they say that after you get your engine timmed to 15.5 or what ever is is louder??? Marks truck is set to 15.5 or 16 and it is not louder than mine. I have stacks so I really don't want louder from the engine but louder out the back would be sweet ;D<br>DM01

Louder in the sense of more &quot;knock&quot; ignition sound. You'd call it a rattle or preignition if on a gasser. On our engines it's just the same noise as usual, only a little louder.
