A couple more gauge questions...

'97 12-valve with a 5-speed.

I know I'm going to get boost, and EGT. I'm trying to decide if there's a 3rd gauge that would be worthwhile installing. Normally I'd go with a trans temp, but, since I have a manual, there's no point. I'm thinking fuel pressure, but I *thought* I read on here that a FP gauge on a 12V was a waste, but I can't find where I thought I saw that now. Or another worthwhile 3rd gauge if you can think of one?

My other question is about the pod. Say I go with 2 gauges. Autometer has 2 pods. One is a 15200, and the other is a 17200. What's the difference, and which one do I need? Looks like one is a FULL pillar, and one is part? I'm not for sure though...

15200:

17200:

Thanks,
Dave

Yea i would say one is a full pillar pod and other is just a screw on deal. I have the 3 gauge pod i think it just looks better. A fuel pressure on a 12 valve isn't a "WASTE" but is not a HAVE to have thing. It is however kinda a nice extra just for piece of mind.

I agree there with the 3 over 2. I'm just trying to find somehing useful that's not going to kill me in price. Fuel PSI...the Phantoms, 0-100 mech is $42, but to get a say 0-30 PSI is electric, and $223...don't really need that.

Make sure not to follow any 24 valve advice on a 12 valve FP gauge, they are way different animals.
A 30 psi gauge won't work, 40 psi minimum, 60 psi is best. The 12 valve lift pump pulsates much worse than the 24 and has a habit of destroying electrical gauge senders in no time.
I consider a FP on a 12 valve to be very worthwhile for diagnostics. It will also pay for itself rapidly in preventing unnecessary filter changes. I change every 30k unless the gauge tells me different.

Great thread, thanks for the link! So looks like a mechanical is the way to go...good, they're cheaper anyways, just need to make sure it's sealed up good. Researching now about DiProcol vs. Iss Pro vs. Autometer.

Hard to beat the the $8.95 Autometer here http://www.surpluscenter.com/item.as...atname=engines

I installed one last week in a '97, it looked to be a high quality USA made gauge.
It even survived me dropping it on the concrete floor.
Just matters if it has the look you're after and will match your other gauges.

AMI is not autometer... trickery in abbreviations.

And a fuel gauge, especially a mechanical one where FUEL is flowing INTO it.. isnt exactly a place to skimp and squeeze your pennies.

Autometer is one word.

Auto Meter Industrial (AMI) isn't.

Wonder if they're related though.

The good stuff gets the Autometer name, the less than good gets sold cheaply as Auto Meter Industrial ?

I always thought that "AutoGage" was AutoMeter's cheaper line...

According to this http://www.elecdir.com/site/store/13253/index.html
Autometer's registered trademarks are: Auto Meter - Autometer - Auto Meter Products Inc. - Auto Gage - AMI - Battery Extender - Super Bezel - Phantom - Pro-lite - Ultra-lite - Shock Strap - C2 - Carbon Fiber - Cobalt - D-pic - Golden Oldies - Lunar Series - Monster Tach - Monster Tachometer - Monster Gauges - Nexus - Pro-comp - Pro-shift - Pro-tech - Sport-comp

The $8.95 gauges are coming from place that sells new surplus, doubt if you could get them that cheap elsewhere. Surplus Center's price doesn't mean the product is cheap.
Like I said, I was impressed with the AMI
