This site is quite something!
It is on the Infinitely Variable Transmission. This link will go to the page for diesel vehicles. It is a very interesting read.
Also, be sure to watch the video. At first you will think the tachometer is not working, but keep watching.
I'll volunteer to try one out!

Cool...

I wonder if it could be set to run somewhere near a more efficient HP / Torque RPM?

How about engine braking...?

Good thing they didn't test a ford at that rpm. I wounder how much power it will hold. Gonna be expensive though.

I don't think that was a Diesel in their video. look at the tach. I thought the chevy diesel tachs only went to 5 or 6K rpm's. 18.2 in the city? no being a jerk, but I get that already.

It is cool though. Engine braking and I think it would work awesome.

The vehicle in the video is not a diesel. However, the data given and the picture shown is for a diesel. They may be talking about a different diesel than the Cummins.

If you want to experience the "CVT" transmission just stop by your local DC dealer and take the Jeep Compass or Dodge Caliber for a drive. Nissan is also using the CVT in some of there cars. Allows the engine to stay in it's torque peak. DC actually programmed a "bump" between shifts because the didn't feel the public would accept a totally smooth transition throughout the power band.

Wow that's pretty cool....I wonder what would happen if you mashed on the gas???

Kinda curious what the read out on the dash was saying, they cut it off and I could only read the last couple letters.

They were around 4-5 years ago and nothing much has become available for our trucks.

I'd bet that dyno was set to freewheel. No resistance. Lets hang a 15k pound trailer behind it and retest.

The engine would go to full throttle but the trans would constantly be re gearing to pull it down in the peak torque.

lets see that thing behind a 500hp cummins then take it out and pull a 30k load with the same truck and see what it will really take . then do a few hooks at the sled pulls.

Deere is putting them behind the 9.0L right now and will have them behind the 13.5 soon. They can hold some serious torque

I'm not impressed. I'm sitting at 1400-1500rpm at 55mph now and that's lugging the fool out of my engine. I'm not to sure that I'd like my engine constantly sitting at 1600rpm.

Yeah, I dont think I want mine at 1200. Or rather, the cars behind me dont , and yeah. I can already get better than 18mpg anyways if I drive like they did in that video. Plus, I like being able to lock the torque converter. Infinitely variable transmissions are pretty good for some things(4-wheelers), but I really wouldnt want one in my truck...
