Comp settings for towing?
Comp settings for towing?
Well I put a comp in the truck a while back and just ran it as a EZ for a while. It towed great and seemed to be getting great mileage too.And then I tapped the wire and it does have more power, but seems to get worse mileage.I don't really know what the mileage is,that is just looking at the gauge. But it is a noticible difference.I ran the EZ turned all the way up when towing. And I tried the comp on 5x3 for a while and then dropped it down to see if the subsettings were killing my mileage. So I have been running it on 1x3 and it doesn't seem to help at all.Whats the deal?It is the same load, same trailer, same weather etc.I am almost ready to take the wire tap off...almost
I towed with mine for the first time 2 weeks ago. Made a 500 mile round trip from NY to Hershey PA to go camping with my 5th wheel.
I found that the truck was surging (bucking slightly) under heavy throttle. I was running on 3X3 on the comp with wire tapped.
I happened to reach down and turn off the comp box while under the surging condition and it stopped. I tried lowering the seting to 1X1 and the same surging returned. I also found that the comp being on did not offer any significant increase in pulling power. On one hill I had the truck floored and had settled in to a steady speed that the truck was maintaining, I reached down and turned on the comp, the slight bucking started. I then slowly one by one bumped the comp up a level at a time and noted the any change to power of the truck. I felt something each time I increased the level (kind of like a millisecond of fuel cut out) but not really anymore power since it failed to increase my speed.
I do feel a difference when running empty, there is also quite an increase in smoke on the upper levels as well as increased boost levels. (I finally got the nerve to put it on 5X5 while running empty one day and hammer it while I was near my house and the boost levels hit 45+ psi! and my EGT's were headed off the charts. So I know the extra fueling is there)
I ended up running with the box off for most of the trip.
Has anyone else experienced a similar effect with thier comp box while towing?

I just can't figure out what happend to my mileage.Any more ideas?I thought the mileage as a EZ looked great,as soon as the wire got tapped it went down.It doesn't really seem to pull alot harder than it did because I run it lower now that its tapped.I just don't know why it took a nose dive.

It's very simple to explain,
When you were running it in EZ mode the additional fueling was minimal, the extra power was mostly from the additional timing the box gives you.
Once you tap that wire, it's all extra fueling from there on and that is why the mileage suffers.

When I had just the comp.. I also towed on 3x3.. never had an EGT problem.. If I went to 4xX I had to watch the gauges... Daily drving was usually on 3x5... I ran the truck for 65K with just the Comp.. on the stock clutch.. and then another 45K with the DDIII's on the clutch.. (Just couldn't use the higher settings.) Like someone else said, if you are not seeing a gain... there's something wrong... You should be abe to find someone else in your area with a comp box... try switching out just the boxes.. and see if that makes a difference with the power.. and surging... (I'm sure have done everything else.. but again.. check the connections.. power and grounds.. and the pump connection.. If you used the tap for the pump wire that came with the comp.. that's not the best connector... about 25K ago, I checked my wire.. and it was almost cut in two by the Scotch lock..)
152K on the truck
120K with the Comp
55K w/Comp & DDIII's
Stock VP 2nd lift pump

I found that with my combo leaving it on 2x2 gets the best mileage. That's with the wire untapped.
