Angry Can't straight pipe it

Ok, well i know that what i have on my truck is infact a cat. and noone here will touch it so my only other option is to just cut off the muffler and have a pipe clamped there. Does anyone know how this will sound? also, Alittle down the road i plan on buying a full 4 inch exhaust system, The problem now is that since i have a cat will it interfere with system i buy. One more question too: Does anyone know how restrictive the cat on my truck is? the power loss and loss in gas mileage? Thanks

The cat is more restrictive than the muffler. But you should be able to cut it off too. You won't notice much difference just removing your muffler, take the cat with it. I think that it is a resinator, not a cat, someone else will chime in here.

DTR can not endorse or recommend anything illegal.
Removal or tampering with smog control devices could be against both state and Federal regulations.

It is a cat, not a resonator, being a 12 valve. 24 valves did not have cats in 98.

it is not illegal to cut the resonator off. not at all, its a diesel, diesel burns way cleaner than any gasserany day, and like he said, the newer ones don't even have one. so cut it off, its perfectly legal. tell them at the muffler shop

I know this has already been said, but here it goes again. Since his '98 is a 12 valve, it is a cat. I believe that in Colorado it is illegal to remove a cat. I am pretty sure they have both a visual and sniff test. I don't like it anymore than the next anti-tree hugger, but remove at your own risk. You can always hollow it out to pass a visual test, but not sure you will still pass a sniffer test.

The 98 12 valves HAVE a cat. The 98 24 valves DO NOT have a cat. Go ahead and get a full 4" system. You won't regret it.

Once again,,,,,,,,
The 1998 12 valve Cummins motor came from the factory with a catalytic converter. I'm almost sure that it is agaist the law in all 50 states to remove it completely.

The 1998.5 24 valve Cummins motor came from the factory with a resonator in front of the muffler. It still may be illegal in some areas to remove either of these due to sound restrictions or modification of factory equipment depending on how strict the laws are in your area.

I have an 86 F-150 that I replaced the original cat with a low-restriction aftermarket cat for about $70. I then ran straight duals from the cat back.
I can still get a ticket for "excessive noise" should I run across the wrong officer, but they can't give me a ticket fro removing the federal mandated emission equipment.

On Edit: ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, is there an echo in here?

Actually it's against federal law to remove the stock exhaust system on any vehicle and replace it with anything that isn't equivalent. Luckily the law is seldom enforced, if someone wanted to get picky even a bigger pipe is against the law.

i was told by a guy i work with that if you look on the fan shroud area of a car it will say if the vehicle is equiped with a cat if it doesn't then they won't even check because they don't know if it had one or not. when i took mine in for e-check they didn't even take a mirror under it and registered a "0" on their test.

I know it is illeagal for registered repair facilities and certified mechanics to alter, tamper with or disable any emmissions equipment or device and the penalty can be very severe. I don' know how it applies to noncertified people and owners who aren't "aware" of it . If you get inspected and fail the test you have a certain period of time to repair it before you get the renewal tags, unless you get Barney Fife the cop God that interprets the law his own way and applies it.

Definetly a huge problem, now this is the only thing that i can say that i don't like about my truck. I am going to take the advice and not remove it just b/c i don't feel like having some [*Edited*] cop pulling me over b/c i drive a nicer vehicle than he does and go off on a power trip and write me about 5 tickets. I do know for a fact that you cannot take it off in colorado but that is not true for all vehicles in all 50 states. I used to live in TX for a couple years and on certain vehicles you could just run straight headers. Kinda stupid if you asked me but half of those jackasses were pure street racing addicts

Remove the kitty, bust out the guts with a steel rod or pipe, then put it back on. You will not have any clogging or restriction problems after that. Of course for off road use only. Visual inspection will show the cat. (That's all they do is a visual-if that, before the smog test).

If you really want to, slip a piese of exhaust pipe in the kitty and put in a few spot welds to cut down on resonation from your hollow kitty. I did not do the pipe inside, and not alot of noise, but some.

It takes a bit of pounding, and a heavy hammer is suggested. Just keep busting the ceramic honeycomb element into pieces. Wear a mask and do it outside. Not sure about a one time platinum exposure, but better safe than sorry. Kevin

my electronics teacher in school told me that if you coat the inside of the cat with paint and put it back on the truck it will burn the insides out
