Cool Build me a quarter pounder please.

My truck is a daily driver, I may tow 9,000lbs with it perhaps once per year. I will not be entering truck pulls, but I would be visiting the local drag strip. I'd like to know the order in which to make upgrades & some recommended packages. It's important that the pieces work together. I am interested to know if there are any particular vendors that offer package deals.

Constraints are:
14.0-14.5s qtr - Enough to have fun, but not crazy.
$4,500
Reliability
Smoke & Noise are acceptable

Is this possible on the budget above?

Here were my thoughts - fire away:

1) Guages - These will be ordered next week (Fuel,Pyro,Boost) Isspro
2) IP - Need to fix my P0216. Think HRVP *if* reliable. Bluechip or PDW
3) Fueling box - Leaning towards Edge Comp
4) Exhaust - 4" straight pipe
5) BHAF
6) Injectors ?

Well lets see. Guages first is always a must of course, fuel pressure, pyro, and boost are needed.

I would start with a new IP, $1700
4" strait pipe - $350
BHAF - $50
Edge comp - $600
Clutch - $1300
Turbo - $1300.
150hp sticks - $600-1000

Unfortunatly i broke your budget, but a clutch will be needed to hold the power to get into the mid to low 14's. Plus you will have too learn the 3 shift pattern. 3 -5 -6.
You might get away from the turbo, but you will be above 1600* at the end of the 1/4.

That link is perfect.

So what's the targeted HP to reach low 14's?

How much do our trucks weigh?

Good point on the clutch - I wasn't counting on that since I just assumed it would need to be replaced anyway as part of routine maintenance - I was going to go with a Southbend when the time comes.

I found it interesting that the article states the stock turbo is good for upto 485hp keeping boost < 34psi...

the stock turbo may make a dirty and hot 485, but with a bigger better turbo (b-1), that number with the same mods would probably reach into the 500's with lower egt's.

as for truck weight, mine is 6600 pounds without me in it and empty tank, so closer too 7300 pounds with me in it, yours will be about 5-600 pounds less than mine i would think, you missing an axle, transfer case, driveshaft, 4X4 suspension and i weigh 270.

If You want to come off the line like A gasser forget the comp and get the Mad Smarty or find someone who has upgraded to the Smarty and buy Thier Cattcher ECM. With only the Smarty and Bosio 820 Sprint injector nozzels along with 4" exhaust and cold air intake I may not be able to hit the high numbers on the dyno but in A 1/4 mile run I can walk away from many of the 450 - 500 hp boys with ease. Horse power numbers and real world racing are 2 totaly diferent animals. Just ask the Boy down the road from Me with the stage 4 injectors and drag comp. I had more than enough jump on Him from the line keep Him in My miror where He belonged while crossing the finish. If You see the need for more fuel down the road You can add the Blue chip or Redline fueling only box.

If you want to run a comp you should go with a regular rebuilt vp44. With injectors and a comp you wouldn't see much of a gain with the HRVP, unless you have a HO. Most will get more power out of putting that money in injectors/turbo. Also if you're going to tow 9000 lbs you're going to want some more air so you better get a turbo on the list.

II VP44 1100
PDR40 1100
Clutch 1000
comp/smarty 650
Injectors 650

That'll bring you in at $4500 Intake and exhaust are relatively inexpensive if you wanted to do them later- I'm just thinking a turbo would offer better egt control when towing than intake/exhaust and I chose PDR 40 because of the price. Oops, I forgot the downpipe- well looks like you're going to need a few more $$'s

Only problem with the article on DieselRam is the whole hearted sale of the K&N air filter. They are great on gassers, but a turbo diesel (especially one pushing 30+ psi) is a different beast in terms of air moved, and how much damadge can be done by a tiny bit of dust.

And Ted needs to do a little bit of research on injectors for our trucks. Don can get you more than 80hp out of the sticks.

IMO get a SO vp44 from II. Like mentioned your not going to see a lot from an hrvp or not as much as the HO guys i should say. 4" exhaust can be bought cheap on ebay around 250. As for the rest of the stuff, keep your eyes pealed and watch the classifieds. You can usually pick stuff up for a little over 1/2 of what it cost new. I know of a guy selling his HTB2 for a 1000 shipped. Little deals like this will save you money which means you have more money for more mods. Edge comps can usually be bought used for 350-450 depending on the day. BHAF are about 35 shipped from filter1.com. Depending how soon you want injectors dynomite diesel performance is having a big sale this month. I'll be sending mine of on monday. My budget brake down would go something like this
Gauges=350 (new)
II SOVP44=1000 (new)
Edge comp, TST PM3, blue chip FMS=~400 (used)
exhause=300 (new)
BHAF=35
Injectors=500 for 150HP (new)
turbo=1000-1200
Clutch single/double=~1000/~1700
