any need for a bigger alternator???

my alternator is shot, had it tested and i'm only putting out 42 amps at 2000rpm with ALL accessories OFF.

i run a few things directly from the batteries:
sport headlight conversion harness
fog lights and driving lights (400w total)
espar heater/in cab fan (prior to startup)
aftermarket stereo (i think 1200w total)
will be adding underhood LazarLites, and probably some more fog or driving lights in the future.

do any of you see a need for a bigger alternator with more output? or is a 140amp replacement good enough?
seems as though i may have a couple of options on 200amp replacements . . .

any input is much appreciated!

From what I've read, the HO alternators do, indeed, put out more juice but only at high RPMs. I would just get a standard 136 Amp one or at least compare the value you get from a higher output one....

I have a few accessories on my truck and will be adding a few more. I put a H.O. 175 amp. ($190) Load Boss alternator on my truck approx. 6 mos. ago and it works perfectly. The company is called Alter Start (Dallas, Tx 800-607-0016) and they sell a 205 amp. alternator ($250) also, both for the 99-01 Dodge Ram.

They come with the pulley installed with a lifetime warranty. Per their website, they state:

"This heavy duty alternator will drop in place of your existing 90-120 amp unit and operates with the existing ecm voltage regulator. This unit will provide 80-85 amps capability at 800 rpm and 175 amps at 1600 engine rpm. This new alternator has been variable speed load tested for performance!"

My alternator came with a printout showing the actual charge output at various rpm's and works great. The links are listed below. Hope this helps

wow, that seems like a pretty good alternator to go with. i will have a better look at the site tonite and then call them tomorrow.

also, from what i have read - it seems as though the HO alternators put out more through the entire rpm range.

i have found a couple others that are rated higher than the 136 amp but the links posted above are cheaper BY FAR compared to the others i have found. lifetime warranty sounds good too!!!

I would recommend a leece neville, 160amps continuous duty:

I put that on my w250.

well i ordered from AlterStart - Just over $300 including a bigger gauge power cable, lifetime warranty, and shipping. It is a direct bolt in replacement which is rated at 205 amps.

hopefully it arrives soon . . .
