AFE Filter great EGTs but dirty oil in 3k miles

I installed the AFe blue filter on my 96. Recently I posted about it sucking the oil out as it was gray. Those who replied said it was just the die, the oil was still there. I've got 3k miles on my oil change. The oil is black.

Black

My oil would gradually turn from amber to dark around the 5k miles, going dark at 6k. I use Shell Rotella and change at 5k miles. I checked the oil yesterday to ensure I didn't need to top it up (I had leaking valve cover gaskets and replaced those). I was shocked to encounter solid black oil. This is the first in 9 years of owning this truck that the oil changed color so soon. The only change was the AFe filter.

I wonder if other high flow filters allow as much dirt in? Supposedly AFe is the best.

I went with the afe dry filter and it works great and stops more dirt than oiled filters. If I were you I would change filters, with a turbo I would not recommend an oiled filter whatsoever. You could also add a pre filter to stop a lot more dirt.

i dont think black oil has much to do with your air filter. is your exhaust hazing or smoking. as far as i can tell dirty oil is caused by over fueling or a bad injector. thats the reason i got rid of my marine injectors awhile ago, my oil would be black within 300 miles. now with ddps its more like 2k.

Th black color in diesel oil is mostly soot contamination.

ditto on the dirty oil being caused by injectors. I had this before I added the AFE.
I wish I could use some foam filter oil on this since its tackier and the dye doesnt vanish, but if i did that Im not sure if I could clean it off again later without melting the rubber.
