97 dodge auto help
So my dad has a 97 12v with over 300 000km on it, its pretty much stock besides a #11 plate which isnt much better then the stock plate(i dont know which position it was put in either) and the tranny was built up a bit when he blew it towing (how much it was built up i have no clue, neither does he) i know it has a transgo shift kit in it and probably a stronger TQ. But it did cost him around 5000$. When we head up hills we could be doing 100-120kmh on the hwy then once we hit the incline we slowly lose speed till the trans downshift from 4th right to 2nd and rev to 2200rpm and just stay there at 80kmh roughly even with the 3gsk (read below) i dont know why it doesnt go in 3rd. Anythoughts on transgo shift kits cuz i dont like the way this truck shifts when driving or towing up a hill, and i havent been in any other 12v autos to tell if this is normal or not.
We recently put in a 3gsk kit in and didnt see that great of results out of it, from a dead stop, you floor it the rpms raise to about 2200 and stay there till it shift then gets back up too 2200rpm then it shift once more then it starts to pull good gradually making its way to 3000rpm, then if you let off and get back on it, it doesnt go past 2200rpm. This being said if you shift it on the tree going 1-2-D you will see 3000rpm everytime. Would you say this is normal for the 3gsk or improperly installed or the transmission is holding it back? We(my brother and I) are going to be pulling my dads truck apart this next week since his head gasket or cylinder head is leaking out fluid slowly, soo he just bought a brand new cylinder head and i ported and polished it before putting it in. I would like to hear back from you guys with ideas about the 3gsk and anything else we should be doing while we're in there, I should also add that we're putting in ARP head studs, #10 plate, turbo boost control elbow and i'm looking for gauges(pyro, boost, trans temp) Any thought are greatly appreciated. My dads not that big into performance but just wants a truck that can keep its speed while driving or towing and get up and go when he wants to pass someone. |
A few more questions, we have been told not to bother with the AFC spring, what are your thoughts on this?
Is it worth it to get a 16cm housing for the hx35, what gains would you see(higher boost, lower egts, quicker spool)? Last but not least my dad doesnt want to spend the money on injectors since they're pretty expensive but nozzles arent too much soo im thinking of suprising him with 75hp-90hp nozzles your thoughts? |
any one?

is the TC locking up? What speed does it unlock?
can you regulate 3rd with throttle control?, like if its revved high can you let off the throttle a bit and get it to go into 3rd? mine if I smash the throttle it'll downshift and then rev too high in 2nd also, but its easy to control with a little throttle input |

Ok sooo its not even an 11 plate in there, we werent 100% sure of which one was actually put in there, it turned out to be a #8
The truck is almost all put back together, we just need to finish torquing down the head and set the valve lash and put the injector lines on, valve covers, intake elbow and connect a couple of wire for the gauges And no one is a transmission expert on here :D |
Have you checked the throttle linkage to make sure it's achieving wide open throttle at the pump when you put the pedal to the floor? I've seen a lot that weren't.

Well I can say you can run into trouble running a 10 plate . This week i went for a little trip towing my fiver and well I did not want a bowtie to stay with me on the hill we were climbing.with my Torque converter switch locked I taped the brake petal and dumped the throttle down, 38 lbs boost and I felt the TC let go at the top of the hill.Even with the TC slipping I made short work on the BT lol. Now for a new T C for my truck. I`am happy IT tows nice and has all the grunt I need. |
When the auto is setup right it will shift properly. Sounds like the TV cable may need adjustment as well as the TPS voltages set for lockup. The 3K kits sounds like it wasn't installed tight enough as it should pull full power to about 2900 even with the #8 plate in there.

how would you adjust the TPS voltages, and once we get the running ill play with the 3gsk, how much tighter would you tighten it?
As far as TPS voltages, http://www.dodgeram.org/tech/transmi...TPS_adjust.htm This should at least confirm it was set properly when they repaired the transmission. This link should help with the TV cable adjustment. http://www.dodgeram.org/tech/transmi..._lever_adj.htm |

I only installed mine per the instructions with measurements of the stud protruding from the spring retainer nut. I used vernier calipers to measure and I made sure the nut was at the exact same depth. Counting clicks didn't work for me as it was too tight after I did that and measured.

Soo today i didnt get to do anything i said i planned to do but i did get the truck street worthy as in putting the hood and bumper back on then took it for a rip down the road, and i saw 30psi of boost and 1100 on the pyro WOT(this is with the #8 plate in stock position) the turbo seems to spool up quicker with the porting done
then i decided to move the plate all the way forward and adjust the starwheel a bit.....and its great, it still doesnt pull to 3g in drive WOT in 1st or 2nd but the rpms did raise 100-200 and i see 35 psi and 11-1200 on the pyro. So tomorrow im going to remeasure the gsk since my brother installed it and see is if he did it right or not torquefan am i missing something cuz i dont see how i can adjust the cable, i got my dad to put his foot to the floor and i could maybe turn the throttle 1/4" or 3/16" more then where it was at WOT With the Hx35 i dont want to go over 35psi right, and what would you guys say is the danger zone for the trans temp iv got the sensor right before it goes into the heat exchanger and i think i saw 215f and the gauge only goes to 250f thanks again |
