3rd gen head??

Ok I have been told before that a 3rd gen head will work on a 2nd gen?? Is that right and if it does fit what all modifications will have to be done? Will I have to use a 3rd gen head gasket? Wanting to know for sure because I can probably get the 3rd gen head for next to nothing. Any help would be greatly appreciated also be great to hear from soome that have done this already. Thanks,

Kevin

A few have done it. You have to open up some cooling/oil passages in the head I believe. I have read threads on cumminsforum and compD that had pics. I think they used a 2nd gen gasket as a template for the passages that needed work. It would be nice to have the 2nd gen head for reference while you're working with the die grinder. From the looks of it the 3rd gen flows a ton more just in stock form.

Oh and you'll have to get some custom crossover tubes. A few vendors sell them, but I don't recall who they are.

So does anybody think it would be worth it? I was going to get me head just cleaned up and o-ringed and studded but I found this and I was thinking I could keep me from being truckless If I just put it on. I would much rather be truckless for a couple days than a week or two.

for the hassle, I'd just run a 2nd gen head w/ a ZZ manifold and get even better flow

On a budget though thats why I wasnt going to do a zz manifold.
