Still truckless but working on it! I found a nice 1995 near me and was wondering what the factory ratings is on this model? Also what can be done to it to up the output without spending a ton of money on it? Or is it worth it to just buy a later model?

A lot can be done.

exhuast (4 inch) and down pipe $500
gauges =200$ egt, boost, trans temp if auto
fuel plate #6 or #8 probably = 150$
BHAF = 50 to 200$
KDP fix = 90$
injectors= 300

oh yea...a 4000 gsk 200$

 

The stock ratings on that truck were 175/420 i believe if it was a manual, and i know they were 160/400 if it is an automatic. With the modifications in my signature(which come to a total of less than 1k dollars), my truck will out run any new truck and also all the stock gassers i've ever raced. It pulls great, and EGT's are controllable. I would say 400hp can be reached fairly cheaply with these trucks. You might have to go to a bigger pump eventually if you want crazy horsepower, but even with the stock pumps these truck will throw down the power with the right modifications.

For mods i would do this:
Gauges: $250 or so
intake: $300 for a nice one
exhaust: Can be had for around $300-$400
Fuel plate: $150 or so
3k or 4kGSK: $125. HD valve springs for the 4k kit will be about $100 more
injectors: $300
turbo housing: $150
built tranny/clutch: From $800-$5000 depending on how extreme you go. A good converter and valve body for an automatic will run you about $1,000 if you get a single disk, and a good clutch will be about the same if its a manual. If you want a full built automatic, then that is where the big #'s come in.
With those mods you should have over 300hp/700tq at the wheels.

Keep in mind, most of this stuff is needed on the newer trucks anyway. None are what you would call cheap to get big HP out of, but it is relatively inexpensive compared to gassers. It sure is fun anyway.lol

Well. It depends. If the body and everything is in really nice shape, and the miles are original then it could well be worth that. That doesent sound to bad. I see truckls all the time they want crazy money for with really high miles. Just make sure everything is tight, and the body is good, and thats probably not to bad of a price IF thats original miles.

its a dually 12valve with only 44 000 miles? and they want 13 000$? sounds like a good deal to me....to "turn up the power" all u need is to grind down your torque plate and slide it forward....all free and you'll have over 250HP but to do it safely u need alot of other things...like gauges and exhaust temp reducers (bigger exhaust etc) and then to feel that power applied against the ground properly in the first 2 gears you'll need a lower stall TC with a better stator

It's definately an 8' box. The short box extended cab 3/4 and 1 tons didn't come out until '98. Nice looking truck, BTW.

that truck aint even broken in yet! 13K? its a steal!! id take it.. Bombs, they have been well covered here, but the stress of good gauges cannot be emphasized enough.. If you are gonna play you are gonna pay.. at least do some "preventative" maintainance to help u prevent the pay part...

KBB says 12,480 for high retail. Does everyone usually pay retail on trucks? I was shooting for a price between private party and retail around 11,500 or so. Doesn't matter though they won't take less than 12,590 for it. I thought they were crazy!

 

I have a 95 automatic that is 4x4 extended and has 117 miles on it. I would suggest these things, some gauges, #10 plate, 3 k gov kit, 17 to 19 deg of timing depends on how hard you are going to run the truck. 215 injectors and the thin washers installed under them. A big air cleaner. For free power just slid the stock plate all the way forward and the afc housing. Set up the timing , give the governor springs a click or two, these things will only make you wont to spend some money to have more hp. I get good mileage 21 or better with the 3.54 gears if I dont stand on the throttle some. For sure check the dowel pin in the timing cover. Things that did help mileage timing, injectors. I wish I had the 5 speed and not the automatic. Good luck Jim

 

I don't think the book values place a high enough premium on the diesel option. Figure on paying $5k for the Cummins, and then paying for what the truck's worth. Ratty 1st gens that would barely be worth $1500 as a 318 gasser sell for $5k.
