14cm non wastegated housing
Does anybody have any experience using a 14cm non wastegated housing on an HX35? I'm considering going this route because it is way cheaper than a wastegated housing and I really would like to drop my egt's while towing on big hills. I have the edge boost fooler elbow on my turbo right now and that pretty much blocks off the wastegate but I don't know if going with a housing that doesn't have a wastegate at all will be a mistake. Also, I don't really want to go to a different turbo because of my exhaust brake. Please comment if you have experience with this. Thanks, Eric

I tried a non wastegated 14 on my 12 valve and ended up going to a wastegated one.
Boost went way higher than the 35 psi I desired, was afraid I was going to toast the turbo. My opinion is that you need at least a 16 cm before you can skip the wastegate but then you suffer slow spool up. |
I'm with Bill on this one. But by the time you get the 14 cm WG housing, you are nearly halfway to a better turbo. PDR sells a B-1 type turbo with an HX-35 outlet, you might condsider that instead.

Either leave the stock 12cm housing, or get a better turbo. I went down that road, and that is my .02 [eyecrazy]

I am really satisfied with the performance of the 16cm non waste I have on mine, As far as slow spool up I noticed a slight difference but after the 4in exhaust install it helped put the spooling back almost to the 12, where it shines is pulling our trailers as egt's are a concern. I use my trucks for pulling trailers and such not romping them around so that is where the 16 non will help allot. Goodluck,,Rick

For a 5spd, the 16cm housing is probably a little better. Its just hard taking off with a load with a tight converter, and the bigger housing. Once it spools, its fine; but it can take a minute to spool depending on your converter.

The problem with high EGTs isn't *just* the tight housing.
It's the fact that the turbine side itself is pretty restrictive. Better to look at a larger turbo than just a 14 ng housing. 12wg is a better option than 14ng IMO for EGT control AND spoolup.... |
