#10 fuel plate and 3000GSK
 
For anyone who hasn't installed a modified fuel plate and 3000 GSK in their stock 12 valver: Do it!!!
I got a chance to tow my trailer today for the first time since installing the mods last month. The difference is truly incredible! Now the cruise control holds the truck at a steady, easy 70 mph on hills it used to strain to maintain 50 mph going up. It is like there is no trailer back there. It is a totally different truck!

A few of the things DC left out: 3KGSK, #10, good transmission, gauges.

$20 says he gets a 4,000 GSK in there in another 12 months.

Pretty cool ain't it? Nothing like a loaded 12 valve roaring up a hill with a heavy load behind it. The responsiveness is amazing. Did you bump the timing as well?

pm Dieselfuelonly and tell him to grind his plate and install a 3gsk....he needs a jumpstart to get going, lol.

i installed a 10 plate in the stock location , havent done the gsk yet ,and moded the afc and at first got a lot of smoke with afc full forward , so i backed it out 1/2 way and still get some smoke .

havent towed with it yet .

how did you know where to set the 10 plate , and what adj did did you do to the afc ?

how did the mods affect fuel usage ?

i saw some power increase but not sure if i am getting fuel benifit ?

How does your auto react to the added power?

shuddering?
slipping?
heat?

Anyone have a good tutorial outlining the install of the GSK and the fuel plate? I'm looking for encouragement that I can do it on my own. I just got a 95 and I'm looking to "perk it up"

The gsk instructions come with the springs, it's not to hard at all.

Have a good magnetic wand, with a small end. You problably will drop something in the pump, just don't freak, it happens more often then you think.
Just take your time fishing it out, its not hard. Theres just not much room to work overall, and being hunched over a fender with a needle nose pliers

There are washers, new springs, and a nut that holds the springs on, each can be dropped. Good to have magnetic tools if you plan to remove from the top of the afc.

I used tstproducts.com 3k springs also, good instructions.

If your not comfortable, by all means have a diesel shop do the springs.

The plate is easy, just either grind it flat, or get a kit piersdiesel.com or tstproducts.com is where I got mine, great instructions.

Reminder: any time you move the plate beyond the stock location, you need to adjust the governor arm. http://www.piersdiesel.com/TechLeverAdj.htm

I don't think you will see me with a 4000GSK anytime soon. I am not after a hot rod to impress anyone, I just want a good strong truck that will pull my trailer without hassle.
Fuel milage unloaded is no different (18 to 20 mpg). I haven't checked it yet while towing, but the fuel gauge didn't seem to go down noticably quicker.
I haven't done anything to the transmission since I got the truck. The tranny felt horrible before the mods and actually seems much better now (It doesn't even need to be downshifted on the hills , maybe that is why. It still feels kind of crappy at slow speeds). I am thinking the tranny is the next big modification when I get a few bucks ahead.
Racinrex, just do a search in this forum on fuel plates and GSK's and spend a few evenings reading and you will find everything you need to know. It is still intimidating as you do it, but as you look back on it, it is really pretty easy and just takes a little determination. Heck, I didn't even know where the fuel plate was when I began! I just looked around until I found it.

I have always heard that stiffer valve springs are required for a 4000 GSK, but really critical for a 3000 GSK. Even with the 3000GSK, I dont spend much time if any above 3000 RPM. It sure pulls nice above 2000 RPM as compared to before. Even my wife, who doesn't pay any attention at all to what I do to the truck said "What did you do to the truck? It really runs nice now."
