I read somewhere that the turbo masters thing is like 89 bucks. I don't see paying that I will find another way.
DM01

Re:02 Wastegate modification

My apologies to Bill Heath at Turbo-Master for posting the incorrect picture of the Turbo-Master installed on the turbo.

When I began installation I noticed it would be an easy mistake to mount the unit upside down so that the arm would not engage properly. I took pictures of it done both way's to illustrate this point and in my haste to get a picture up for you guys to see, I put up the wrong one.

He noticed it immediately of course and sent me an email.

Sorry Bill for giving you a fright, I had not yet cataloged all the pictures properly for the article and grabbed the wrong one.

Nice to know the guy making these things is really on the ball though!

Below is a picture with the arm attached in the proper fashion, in the article I will explain the difference.

Re:02 Wastegate modification

So... do you have to remove the Turbo to install this product? Or did you just do it for the article? ???

Tony

Re:02 Wastegate modification

The directions do indicate removing the turbo. I believe that would be the preferred method of performing this mod. Heck, they give a new turbo gasket. I'm seriously considering this mod over the elbow, and as long the turbo is off, what better time to tap the manifold for the EGT sensor? I only wish there was some way to get baseline EGT beforehand, as I'm not interested in removing the turbo twice or risking the ingestion of metal bits. I think I'll install the gauge and route the probe into the engine compartment while I'm installing the boost gauge, then hook the EGT up when I do the turbo mod.

Re:02 Wastegate modification

I don't think there is anyway you could install a Turbo-Master without removing the turbo, simply because you have a small spring clip that needs to be put on and it would be down under and away from your vision.

Removing the turbo isn't such a bad deal though, and it gives you a chance to tighten some hose clamps down in under it that you can't see any other time as well.

Re:02 Wastegate modification

For good air on a HY stay 29 or30 at most. Are your going injectors also? On the HX you can go upto (almost) 40.

Re:02 Wastegate modification

Thanks for the response danlit. I have installed 275's with EZ box. The Turbo Master adjustable boost sounds like the way to go. 29 psi will be my max with the hy-35. The pdr HX-35 will have to be in the future. Too much $$$$$$ for now.

Re:02 Wastegate modification

Hi guys,
The turbo doesn't strictly have to come off the truck and we have some folks who have done the job without pulling it.
However we feel it is better to remove and reinstall because we think it assures the best installation. Besides, when you are old like me, your arm is short and your eyes are weak ---
Admittedly, we are well practiced at it, but we do the recommended installation in 30 minutes or less.
In our research of HY performance, we find that the range of maximum airflow performance (considering exh flow through the turbine housing as well as compressor performance) is 32-34 psi.
We feel that this Turbo-Master-influenced boost pressure range works quite well when combined with an E-Z, or perhaps one of the adjustable boxes set to a lower power level. The trans can live with it and still, the performance is good.
When the performance mod is stronger and the trans has also been setpped up, it would be more appropriate to upgrade from the HY to an HX35 anyway.

Thanks
bill@turbo-master.com
