Overdrive fix.

Good morning gang:

I remember reading about wiring a direct current to the overdrive on a 1st Gen, but I can't seem to find it. My overdrive quit again and I do not want to change the factory part (again).

Can anyone direct me to the post explaining how to run a by-pass? I would not mind having it on OD all the time since I do not pull anything heavy with this truck.

I just got through replacing the factory flex plate with a new factory flex plate and got bopped over the head from my local dealer ($500.) I know I could have bought an aftermarket flexplate for $130.00, but I did not have the time to wait for it. My friend lent me his lift and I had to R&R the flexplate quickly. So, I figure that the money I saved on labor was far more than the $360 flexplate difference. It just burns my A$$ that my local dealer wears a ski mask and a gun when they charge me for their "Factory authorized parts!"

Just a side note: The dealer told me that they send out 20+ flex plates per month for the 1st Gens! You think this was a design flaw? Nah, it couldn't be......

By the way, I am in down state New York (where EVERYTHING is expensive!)

I can't wait to retire and move out of this state...........

Thanks for any help.

Wow you got raked over the coals on that flexplate. Hopefully It's thicker than stock.

for overdrive you could install a Potentiometer kit from DNR Customs... http://www.dnrcustoms.com/zen2/index...6a1b03115fa7cb

There's also a few write ups in the sticky on how to make the potentiometer kit for like $5, but if you don't feel like doing it you can just buy it from DNR.

. It's basicly a **** that lets you pin point set when you want O/D to engage, you can turn the **** and it'll engage at 40,41,42 or whereever you want, you just turn the kno., it plugs into where the TPS does. You can then get rid of the TPS>

There's also a Wire on the driver side of the A518, If you GROUND that wire. That will engage o/d. With the key on it should be the wire that DOESN'T have 12 volts to it.

Someone on here will know exactly which wire I'm talking about. I'm 1% sure It's blue. But 99% sure I'm wrong

here it is in the sticky:

https://www.dieseltruckresource.com/...s-t142641.html

Took me about a half hour once I had all the parts in hand. I think it took longer to take my dash trim off, than the entire procedure.

Read the thread. Really self explanatory. Fantastic to have one, even after several months of use. I set it once, and haven't touched it since.

Yes, it is a thicker flex plate that Mother re-designed. I know about the raking, but I had no choice in the matter (double darn it!)

Now its time for the OD.

Thanks for your input.

Why ?

Want to steal something off of my truck ????

I'm not Jim Lane, you know. My alarm has a bullet attached to it..... He just scares them away, while I'll dig a hole and bury the guy who touches my rig. I have more land than he does....

I'm about an hour or so from GWB

BTW, Do you do slate roofing ? If so, is it still about $1000 a square plus materials ?

There is another method that bypasses the electronics completely. It consists of a pressure switch mounted on the transmission that senses your speed and engages and disengages the overdrive. You should be able to do a search and find it out. Just my two cents, Mike.

Depending on the slate purchased and accessibility of the roof you can easily be up to 3-k per square installed.
A decent Vermont non fading green slate is about $425+ per square bought.
As far as stealing something from you, there is nothing at/in/on your home that I would sacrifice my honor for, you have no worries there!
Besides, I would never pi$$ off someone who owns a backhoe !

"Hey, anybody see Slate?"

I thought maybe we could meet as so I can see your truck and the work you did on it is all.

I always enjoy meeting like minded people and you sound a lot like me. (Heaven help us!)
Now, I've a qustion for you:

How many months supply of food/water/ammo do you have fella?

Q? Who's slate ? besides you, Doc....

Q? Are you an independent contractor, or do you work for someone else ?

Q? If so, registered in NJ to work, or just NYC ?

Why ? Because you slate guys are like the "Yetti".
People hear about you, but are never really seen anywhere.

Q? Are you keeping an eye on the thread that mentions the "east coast guys meeting up ???

https://www.dieseltruckresource.com/...s-t297924.html

i've been watching it, but it seems very few are interested. Hopefully,. by spring there will be enough interest to have everyone meet up. That would be cool.

The answer to your question above .... is I don't have any "months of food / water stored. I do have enough ammo to take from someone who does, though...

Your not well at all........I love it!

It is my slate roofing company. Was a 14-man operation, now I'm down to my man servant and myself full time. I hire good guns if and when I need to. But I am starting to wind down because I'm basically done with customers that do not care about doing things right. They just want cheap and fast. I don't dance that dance!

It’s a shame that I have gotten to this stage for I really enjoy slating and/or restoring/repairing a nice period dated slate roof. I feel a wonderful sense of accomplishment when I am done, however, there are not that many people out there who see it as an art form and I am now feeling the effect of years of roofing on my body. Also added to this is the fact that it is difficult to hire good mechanics that also give a crap. Forget about it! The sad part is, I would pay people very well, but no American wants to work (around these parts anyway.) They want the money, but they rather be drinking or drugging or whatever! $hit happens I guess. I used to sell recycled slates throughout the country as well. At one point, I had over 250-K pieces of recycled slate and tiles in my warehouse/shop I used to rent. There is nothing better than repairing a nice roof using the correct color slates from the same period. You could not tell I was ever there. That is a proper repair (in my mind.)

Anyway, I am going to order the TPS delete kit from DNR Customs today when I get out of the woods with my bow. I do not have time to chase down the individual parts like one member did (nice job too!) One of the links provided stated that one item was no longer available, so I think it prudent to get it in one shot. Its a $30.00 more, but the time factor would be much greater.

Ciao
