...and yet another computer question.

Recently the motherboard in my computer died and I can't locate a replacement anywhere. If I upgrade to a more modern motherboard, can I use any of the compants from my old computer? My old 'board is a socket 'A'. I have a nice aluminum case but the power supply is a bit iffy. Have a new 80 Gb HD that I recently transferred all my old data to, new DVD/CD burner and a new DVD reader.
Is it practical to buy a more modern 'board and power supply and plug the rest of the stuff into it? I am trying to do this in the most economical way possible. If so, which motherboard and P/S to buy?

Stan,
I'm afraid they stopped making replacement parts for your computer several decades ago.
Are you sure it's not just that the power supply for your CPU?
Check to make sure the hamster is still moving.

you could find a new socket A, but it will require a new install of windows, if you are running it. so much of a hardware change and it will most likely require a re-activation. Be prepared to do this over the phone and it might be easier than trying online, just explain that your motherboard died and you replaced it. Have you serial / key ready. As for the mobo that you had, what was it, I might be able to locate one. if not, I can link a bunch of possible new ones for you.

Hey, it's not THAT old in years, but I know in computer time it is ancient. Isn't anything electronic obsolete 6 months after you get it home, even the latest, biggest, fastest and best?

Thanks.
No problem with having the S/N and key as I have that. My old board is a socket A Gigabyte GA-7VTXE+/GA-7VTXH+. Have tried all the usual outlets plus e-Bay. Some stores still list the board, but show as no stock. Sent an email to Gigabyte asking if they could either point me to where I can locate a new board or failing that, to find a suitable alternative. So far, negative response from them. Guess they do not care about their customers.

Thanks. I already found this one, but as you said, it is not cost effective to ship. Sorry, but I should have mentioned that I had found this. There is also one in Germany. I need something in the states.

I'm not sure if they can help you with your motherboard but I've had good luck with a power supply from here. http://www.911forpcs.com/index.html

Tried Newegg and they told me that they do not have one in stock. Sent them another query on Friday but no response yet.

They still have them at pricewatch.com. They have msi and pc chips etc. I like msi myself. pc chips makes a decent board but don't get the one with the sis chipset. The one that I saw was a viatech kt6 chipset for $39.99
You may have to fish around a little bit. Let me know if you have a problem. I go to the computer shows sometimes I'm sure that I could scrape something up.
