Cheap and simple? Revolver, I know several guys that swear by the Ruger Single 6 in .22 Mag, or a 357/.38 Special.

Pawn shop 357 mag 4 inch barrel you can load it with all sorts of amo snake shot 38s or 357 mag. Nver have to worry about jamming or any thing like that. I would work somthing into the drver side under front seat.

You may also want to look into the mid grade semi auto's. The S&W Sigma is one that comes to mind. It was the first semi auto I ever bought. I got it chambered in .40 S&W with 2 14 round magazines for about 320 out the door brand new. Very reliable, very comfortable. A little large for me for CCW so I now carry a HK USP .40c. The Sigma will treat you right, and the .40 is nothing to mess with. I would cancel the idea of a lock box for the gun. If the time comes that you need it, you're going to need it right now and you're not going to want to mess with keys and locks or anything like that. There are a few companies that make some really nice holsters that strap under the seat. Uncle Mike's probably makes one. I would look into something like that.

I carry a sig p229 in .357 sig and love it too.

If you want to go cheap get a used revolver or Bersa .380 which is really cheap new.

Keep it under the console.

I carry a High Point 9mm. Small, handy, and put over 1000 rounds thru it and hasn't jammed once. Biigest thing is it was cheap! Bought it brand new with an extra clip, and IWB or belt holster ( can use either way ) and only had about 235 bucks in it. Has a lifetime guarantee to the original purchaser as well. It comes in several calibers too.
