what CB?

I am looking to put a cb radio in my 97 5 speed and was curious what you guys are running and where you mount them.

I was thinking one with all the controls on the mic and mounting it under the seat.

Run a Uniden PRO520XL CB in the cubby hole in the dash and a scanner in front of the middle seat (like having the weather stations on the scanner, any CB that I found with weather station capability wouldn't fit in the cubby hole).

Cobra and Midland both make units like you are talking about.

The Cobra unit, everything mounts out of the way (+12V is hard wired to a source) and all the controls are in the handset:
Cobra C75WXST

The Midland unit plugs into the cig. lighter, but you can take the bottom part off, add a battery and an antenna and you have a portable CB. A neat idea, but not a hard wired solution like the Cobra.
Midland CB

That was a good idea. I had a 97 Dodge and the engineer that said "hey man, this is a good place for a cupholder" should be forced to suck on the exhaust hose running outside a shop on a diesel dyno day.

I have an old GE unit from 1974 (It was my dads...sentimental value) and it is mounted right below the ashtray which has been converted into a switch panel for extra lights and an air horn button. It is hardwired and works well.

When it comes to CB radios, would you be any better finding an older model than a newer one? For tools and appliances I swear that stuff made before 1980 is inheirently better; do CB's apply to the same logic?

It's worked for 32 years, but that being said, I'm sure there have been major improvements since then. the only thing I can say is that it is built like a tank. All metal and solid. The RF meter is broken so I need to fix that but I like it and it works. I'm sure a better, well mounted and adjusted antenna will make the biggest difference. Just a guess though. Have fun!

The Uniden and Cobra are the same thing. Different color lights. I'm running the 29series Cobra w/weather. I had the Cobra 75 series. Absolutely hated that radio. Sub par rx/tx. The handle is too big for extended conversation. I think for most it's either love or hate with that rig. On my 96' I had a ham radio mounted at the base of the center seat. Avoid the Cobra 75.

Some consider weather on a CB an abomination. I find it very convenient for Jeepin'.
