What is this ...?

The last few days when I open certain pages on my computer a small purpleish colored window pops up near the top RH of my screen. Inside is Double click, Google AdSense and Google Analytics. To my knowledge I never asked for this junk and want to get rid of it, but can't. Checked on the internet and find that others are having the same problem I am having. Followed the advice given to get eliminate these, but nothing appears to work.
Any suggestions as to how to dump this unwanted garbage?

What web browser are you using?

You probably downloaded something you needed, and did not notice that there were other applications in it... you need to find where they are installed on your browser and delete them.

There's an opt-out here that may help.

Thanks. Found and did this yesterday, and thought I had the problem licked, but have it again this morning. Am now trying it again.

I wonder if "Hijack This" might be able to help.

Good point. Did it about two weeks ago, so will do it again now.

On edit.
Ran it and it found a few small items, but now there are 10 or 12 items that pop up in the purpleish box every now and then.
Checked all and the Firefox addons and everything looks of. Deleted a few .
This is getting very annoying.

Just noticed at the bottom RH of my screen there is a new icon with the words 2 trackers next to it. When I hover the mouse over it I get the message that says " 2 trackers found on this page, 0 blocked". This is on DTR
Played around with some other sites and discovered that the icon is resident and the amount of trackers changes. There is zero for my email and up to 5 trackers on another site.
Now what and how do I get rid of this?
My AVG shows nothing and my registry cleaner came up clean.

Already done that. My history automatically gets deleted on every shutdown.
Also cleared my cache.

With friends like you ..............
Thanks anyway. (but not sure what I am thanking you for)

On one site I visited, next to the tracking icon another icon appeared and when I right clicked on it the words "authenticated by thante consulting pty ltd" appeared.

I'm running Firefox too and I've noticed it has quite a few annoying little quirks. I get a popup everytime I initially sign on. Have no idea what it is or how to get rid of it so I just click ok and then the page loads. My netbook never did this until today when Firefox did an upgrade and now the netbook is the same as this computer.
